11-year-old son, Wayne, who had
slipped and fallen Into tho water.
The child was saved. Mr. Reiser's

of Portland, formerly of Mcd
ford, has many friends In this
city who will be grieved to learn
of the tragedy which has bcfullcn
her.

Works next month will begin
construction on the first coastal
cargo vessel since the day of the
old steam schooners, L. R. Hussa,
vice-president, announced here
today.
Hussa said that prewar ship
ments of lumber between Wash
ington and Oregon ports to points
In California averaged about
1,000,000,000 board feet a year.
Before the war there were about
90 ships available for the trade,
however, the majority wore out
dated wood - constructed steam
schooners. The balance of the
craft were steel constructed
craft, converted to the lumber
trade.
Of the entire prewar fleet,
about 12 vessels remain in opera
tion. Hussa, who designed the
new vessels, said they would be
constructed with a carrying
capacity of more than 2,500,000
board feet coastwise storage and
much In excess that for offshore
storage. He pointed out that few
receiving points have facilities
for storing large quantities of
lumber at one time, and the de
lay caused In assembling and
discharging cargoes of great
amount has been prohibitive In
the past.
The freighter will have a draft
of 18 feet, and is designed with
out 'tween decks. The greatest
expense in loading results from
"heading up" the holds and the
cheapest cargo to handle is from
the deck load.
Hussa said the new craft carrys
the house at the stern, which
permits the stowage of tho deck
cargo in one piece, eliminating
much expense.
There are three large holds.
The hatches are largo enough to
permit adequate stowage prob
lems. Dooms are long. There are
no hold stanchions.
To date, four of the vessels
havo been contracted for. Ways
at Albina now are being pre
pared for building of tho new
croft.
TOKYO PREPARES

Japanese peoplo today that the
war Is "steadily approaching the
homclond" as Allied bombers
were revealed to have struck
new blows from the Kurilcs In
the northern empire to the Dutch
East Indies.
The Tokyo broadcast, recorded
by FCC, was made in connec
tion with an appeal for greater
production of planes and muni
tions. An earlier broadcast dis
closed that Tokyo was preparing
for expected Allied air raids.

Acting Chairman J. A. Krug of
the War Production Board urged
all war plants to maintain full
production on Labor Day.
"We have not yet reached the
point where we can afford to re
lax In any of the key programs
which are still behind schedule,"
Krug said.
"Our production of such things
as heavy trucks, heavy truck
tires, forgings. and castings,
heavy artillery, heavy artillery
ammunition and so on must con
tinue to Increase if wo are to
meet the requirements of our
armed services.
"Therefore, I urge that full
working schedules be observed
on Labor Day in all plants pro
ducing goods for key programs
which ore not up to schedule."

Licking up the slopes of forest
ranges from Santa Barbara to
San Diego, two new fires blazed
out of control In the Anza and
Aguanga districts of Riverside
county today.
Two hundred marines from
Camp Pendleton and 350 sol
diers from Camp Hahn struggled
to check the fires which started
15 miles apart.
The Anza blaze, burning north
In the direction of Pines-Palms
highway which leads from River
side to Coachella valley, was
threatening the timberland on
Santa Rosa and San Jacinto
ranges.
The Aguanga fire was burning
along the northern border of
San Diego county.

in Sinkiang province, the north
western tip of China at the junc

abolished today in what was be
lieved a move to improve rela

ed to the central government
command and a veteran member
of the Kuomintang Wu Chung
Hsin, chairman of the Mongolian-Tibetan
commission, was
named governor.
The former governor. Shcng
Shih-Tsai, who held the post for
12 vears. was named minister of

formation of the Fourth Republic
and organize new French divis
ions to aid Allied forces in

Carrel, former research biolo
gist at Rockefeller Institute in

his public functions under the
"purification" program of Val
lery Radot, new minister of
health. The 71-year-old scientist
was a director of the Vichy foun
dation for the study of human
relations and head of the Carrel
Institute.
The arrest of alleged collabor
ationists was in line with a
proclamation by Marcel Willard,
secretary general of justice, call
ing for "immediate punishment
of traitors and profiteers of de
feat" and promising that "all
guilty persons must Be unable to
do any further harm and unable
to escape the fate they deserve."
