RED CROSS GETS
CARTONS FOR WAR
PRISONER GIFTS
Reinforced cardboard cartons
for the convenience of next of
kin sending the every-two-months"
packages to prisoners-of-war
have been received at the
office of the Jackson County
Red Cross chapter, it was an
nounced today by Seth Bullis,
chapted chairman. The cartons
are now available at the chapter
office in the courthouse, Med
ford, and can be used to send
Christmas parcels to prisoners-of-war,
using the regular labels
sent to next of kin by the army.
The American Red Cross has
purchased these containers in an
effort to assist in the gigantic
and all-important task of prompt
ly delivering the personal par
cels to servicemen and civilians
held by enemy countries. It Is
expected families of war prison
ers in the future will be able to
procure the cartons at regular
intervals of about every two
months.
Prompter service in handling
the cartons will result from use
of the standard box, officials
state. It is not always possible
for relatives to obtain the proper
carton, nor can they estimate
the strength that a box must have
t" survive its overseas trip. Pack
ages not strong enough to sur
vive must be repacked in solid
cardboard containers at the cen
sorship office, causing delay and
excessive handling, it is said.

LAID TO BIDDLE
Los Angeles, Aug. 29 (U.R)
Charges by Attorney General
Biddle of conspiracy bettveen
railroads to fix rates is a "purely
political matter" and pre-election
strategy by the administration,
William T. Jeffers, Union Pacific
president, asserted today.
"Attorney General Biddle and
Assistant Attorney General
Berge are wrong and before the
coming election is over will find
that their allegations are very
poor politics," Jeffers stated.
Jeffers said that the railroad's
federal and interstate boards are
fully adequate to control railroad
rates and management.

BIOOLE FOR END
Washington, Aug. 29 U.R5
Attorney General Francis Biddle
told the senate military affairs
subcommittee on war mobiliza
tion that any peace which leaves
Germany's great industrial com
bines Intact "will be a peace to
insure another war against us."
Declaring that these combines,
through restrictive international
agreements, sought to "cripple
American production" during
the interval between wars. Bid
die mentioned as 'examples the
Carl Zeiss optical firm, Fried-
! rich Krupp, the Stahlwerksver-
bund Steel Trust, Osram, and I.
G. Farbenindustrie.
Biddle asserted that after the
Allied victory we must "break
the power of the German monop
olistic firms" and destroy the
system under which the com
bines were able to build up in
ternational cartel agreements.
