On the Western Front, France,
Aug. 23. (U.PJ Authoritative
military sources said today that
the German army in France is
in a "complete tail spin" as a re
sult of the wide-open allied mili
tary tactics and apparently has
"lost all capability of further of
fensive action."
A spokesman, reviewing the
operations of the past month
which transformed stalemate in
to rout, said that there were two

for the scythe-like sweep which
sealed off Brittany and now is
enveloping Paris.
Yankees Gambled
"It can be said that we gam
bled to a certain extent, espec
ially In view of the delicate sup
ply problem," the spokesman
said. "But in the main our strat
egy was boldly premeditated,
whereas the Germans put all
their eggs in one basket in'coun
terattacking in the direction of
Avranches.
"The failure of this counter
attack and the Germans' gross
miscalculation of the strength of
the United States armored forces
available to move southeastward
and subsequently on the north
ward sweep proved fatal."
Strong United States forces
are converging upon the Import
ant ports of Brest,' St. Nazaire,
and Lorient on the Brittany pe
ninsula and the new drive to
ward the northwest directly
threatens the great seaport of Le
Harve. Hence, by the time the
storms develop in the English
channel, harbors other than
Cherbourg should be available
to allied shipping.
Equipment Lost
The capture of enemy organi
zational equipment stranded in
side our lines by the swift move
ment of battle is regarded by
some as even more important
than the great bag of prisoners.
It still is possible that the
total bag of prisoners in the
Falaise-Argentan sacks will to
tal close to 100,000 in the opin
ion of some military quarters.
The Germans south of the
Seine have been virtually strip
ped of tanks, guns, mortars, and
transport. Prisoners include the
commanding general of a Ger
man army corps and his entire
staff. The general revealed that
his predecessor was killed by
bombing near St. Lo, scene of
the great armored break-through
last month.
The germans at best are be
lieved capable of rallying 10 or
15 divisions for the defense of
Paris. Disorganization shown by
the number of high ranking Ger
man officers found racing thru
the countryside smack into our
lines indicates that the Germans
have no future military plan in
France, hence current allied op
erations may affect the entire
course of the war.

small arms at Raritan Arsenal,
near here. The 45-year-old Ne
gro mother, who has six sons
in the army and two other chil
dren at home, is one of 100
mothers who are working In th
arsenal small arms shop. Five
of her six sons are overseas.

PRACTICE LAW
William Kellington, who suc
cessfully passed tho state bar
examination July 11 and 12 In
Salem, said today he planned
to resign his position as deputy
sheriff and enter law practice
here on Nov. 1.
He was one of 11 men and
three women listed Monday by
Arthur Benson, clerk of the
state supreme court, as having
passed tho examination.
Kellington obtained all his
knowledge of law by studying
in various local law offices and
in the county sheriff's office, and
expressed his appreciation to the
Medford attorneys who helped
him in his studies.
