nitis which clears up after the
cavities are properly filled. Any
chronic infection In the nasal
cavity or in one of the sinuses
may cause kernels In the neck.
Even chronic eczema about the
face, head or neck is usually
associated with kernels in the
neck.
Tuberculosis of the lymph
nodes in the neck or elsewhere
is the condition formerly called
"scrofula." This condition, tu
berculous adenitis, whether
lymph nodes or "glands" in the
neck alone are involved or
whether lymph nodes In other
parts of the body, say those
around the bronchial tubes back
of the windpipe and those be
hind the Intestines in the abdo
men, are likewise Involved, is
so important that we shall only
mention it here it merits more
detailed dicussion in talks to
follow.
In a talk about tonsils and
adenoids published here recent
ly, I said that in my opinion one
of the best in

Is to say the lymph nodes (popu
larly called 'glands") along the
sides of the neck from under the
ears to the top of the breastbone
are enlarged', sometimes some
what tender, and can be felt as
small lumps, or seen as small
swellings when they are quite
inflamed.
. This is meiely my opinion, re
member, and I speak only for
myself, not for any part of the
medical profession I am not too
positive that such "kernels" are
sufficient to indicate tonsilloto
my (and I mean meiely tonsillot
omy, "clipping" the tonsils, not
the atrocity of "complete remov
al" which is "complete" in the
ory only), but if I were to decide
whether a child with large ton
sils and adenoids and. say, car
trouble or obstruction of normal
breathing should have a tonsil
lotomy and adenoidotomy, pro
vided the tonsils and adenoids
had failed to shrink under X-ray
treatments, I'd advise the opera
i tion if the child had "kernels'.'
In the neck,
' It must be remembered that
kernels In the neck may be due
to several other causes than ton
sils or adenoids. Generally a
child with middle ear Infection
or "running ear" has kernels on
the same side of the neck. If the
child has one or more decayed

are now getting $33 for the same
service. 1 wonder what these oppor
tunists will do If and when the war
suddenly ends? Can they survive on
the patronage of the people who will
still have too much money to spend?

and associated nations. Now, It
was explained, Argentina has
been put on the same restric
tive basis applicable to neutral
nations such as Sweden, Spain,
Portugal and Eire.

move, officials described It as
being entirely "logical" since the
United Suites government has
classified Argentina as a neu
tral which is not cooperating

Observations of a country
woman In the city: Even down
home not all of us women leave
the color of our hair entirely up
to nature When nature trios to
fool the public by putting snow
on our heads while there's still
fire In our hearts we dun't take
the deception lying down. We
go Into temporary retirement,
either at a beauty parlor or In
the seclusion of our own bath
room, and when we omrrge we
have raven black locks even
like unlo thne of Minnehaha,
beloved by Hiawatha, In fact,
even blacker for there simply
Is no black quite so black as
that which a gray haired woman
can achieve give her a Utile
time and the proper material.
But In the city the preferred
feminine hair color scheme for
young and old alike Is red; red
with purple roots Oh, there are
lotsvof exceptions but the red
heads are in the majority; I
mean red with purple roots. I
may find that, come the holiday
season, they'll go In for a red
and green matlf which I think
would be most appropriate, but
at this season red and purple
Is the mode.
Another thing about women
In the city which I find most
amazing is how women, even
grandmothers, have retained the
firm, high "little green apole"
bosoms of their girlhood. That
Is, I was amazed until 1 discov
ered the secret In a store where
I found them on display nt 25c
a pair. Getting personally In
terested. I made Inquiry and
specified "size 42," but It seemed
"little green apple" forms didn't
come In super-colossal contours
Beautiful coats of authentic
looking sun tan on the faces of
many girls fooled me until I
noticed how white was the skin
showing In their hair parts. One
girl had forgotton to "tan" her
ears. The effect was quite arrest
ing, which may have been her
Intention.
To say that the majority of
city women are addicted to red
and purple hair Is unfair to the
many who groom themselves
most tastefully and becomingly,
but to a country woman the for
mer were much more noticeable.
Yet one and all, they had the
long black eyelashes which have
always been my secret ambi
tion. Buying the wherewithal
to achieve these, I met with in
different success on my lashes
but by night had some fancy
zebra effects on my cheeks. I'd
forgotten about my eye winkers
and had cried with homesick
ness when I got the mall Moral:
Never take on mascara and
homesickness at the same time.

TAFT SAYS ARMY TOO
EAGER TO AID VOTING
Washington, Aug. 17 U.B
Sen. Robert A. Taft, R., O.,
charged today that the army
was "unduly anxious about get
ting out the vote" for the No
vember election and cited a War
Department circular of June 13,
1944, to back up his assertion.
Whereas the soldier vote law
only instructs the department
to "assist" soldier voters, Taft
declared, the circular also urges
commanders ' at all levels to
"encourage" them.
