DANCE TONIGHT
Tonight and tomorrow will
see the final program of the
MarKade, recreation center for
servicemen maintained at St.
Mark's Episcopal church here,
and the center will close tomor
row night, it was announced to
day. The center has been in op
eration for about a year, first
under the direction of Mrs. Lil
lian Hinman and for the last sev
eral weeks under the direction
of Mrs. Ruth Boyd, and is being
closed due to the small number
of men now stationed here with
the army.
The dance this evening Is
planned for 8 o'clock and it is
hoped that an unusually large
number of hostesses and serv
icemen will be on hand. Mrs.
Boyd stated this morning that
she had enjoyed her Work at the
center and expressed her ap
preciation to the hostesses and
other volunteers for their splen
did cooperation and to the citi
zens who donated supplies for
the operation of the service cen
ter in recent weeks.
The Rev. George R. Turney,
rector of St. Mark's church, also
stated that he and other church
officials were very appreciative
of the work of the many volun
teers who had aided with the
center's program. The value of
this work for enlisted men is
reflected, the rector said.-in the
many letters and other expres
sions of appreciation from the
men which have come from a
wide variety of camps and bases
all over the world.
The rector quoted as typical
the remark of an older man, who
also saw service in the last war,
who, in telling the minister
good-bye, remarked of the Mar
Kade, "This is the best piece of
Christian service for servicemen
that I have seen anywhere."
It was stated that for the pres
ent the rooms occupied by the
center would be given over for
the use of general parish activ

District Attorney Fred N. How-
ser announced today he had pre
pared felony complaints against
three movieland notables who
participated in the bloody bat
tle of Tommy Dorsey's balcony
that began when Actor Jon Hall
patted the sleek shoulder of the
band leader's wife.
"At this time I will not name
the parties," Howser said, add
ing that he had asked Hall to
sign the complaints,
"Hall has been advised of the
facts and he can make up his
own mind whether he wants to
sign them."
The complaints charged as
sault with a deadly weapon up
on Hall, whose nose was almost
lopped off by a knife and whose
neck received several deep
gashes.
"If Hall refuses to sign the
complaint," the district attor
ney continued, "I shall have no
choice but to present the entire
matter before the criminal com
plaints division of the county
grand jury with the request that
it conduct an investigation and
let the chips fall where they
may."
The grand Jury convenes

prices rallied moderately in all
sections except the utility which
recorded a minor loss.
Gains among the leading in
dustrial issues ranged to more
than a point. The pressure in

rose without effort. Chrysler
was up a point and other motors
were firm. War stocks rose as

U.R) Six-year-old Shirley Ann
Gillham, object of an intensive
17-hour state-wide hunt yester
day after she was reported pos
sibly kidnaped, was returned to
her parents today unharmed.
Shirley was left asleep in her
parents' car outside a local
nieht club late Monday night.
Fifteen minutes later Mrs. Alc
nora Gillham, her mother, found
both car and child missing.
Yesterday afternoon a girl In
a pink flowered dress with a
green ribbon in her hair went
into a drug store in San Jose,
35 miles from San Leandro, to
find 'something to eat." She
didn't know where "mommy
was," she said.
A waitress called police, who
found the Gillham car nearby,
undamaged. Police said they be
lieved whoever stole the car
was unaware of the child's pres
ence. She apparently slept vir
tually the entire time of her ab
sence, officers declared.

Dewey Refers To
Roosevelt Trip
As a "Holiday"

Thomas E. Dewey, Republican
presidential candidate, referred
to President Roosevelt's Hono
lulu trip as a "holiday."
The governor, when asked to
comment on the President's
trip to Pearl Harbor at a press
conference late yesterday, said
"I don't comment on Mr. Roose
velt's holidays."
"Did you say holiday advised
ly?" a reporter asked.
"Of course," Dewey replied.
He said ho was thrilled at the
news of the invasion of south
ern France and added that is
the only news there is.

Cured Fish Prices

Consumer prices for most popu
lar types of cured and smoked
fresh and salt water fish will go
up on an average of 10 cents a
pound under new dollars-and-cents
ceilings announced today

tration. Types of fish affected by the
order, which directly affects

smoked mild-cured salmon
(Lox), sablefish, kippered sal
mon, and whitefish.

P. Cowgill, commanding officer
of the guard, and Col. Raymond
F. Olson, acting adjutant general
for the state, were in Medford
last night. Col. Olson was re
cently appointed to the post of
acting adjutant, having returned
from overseas duty.
The two officers were present
for the regular drill of the com
pany and then conferred with of
ficers. Col. Olson stated that
more property and equipment
is due the company and will be
provided in the near future. He
pointed out that firms having
property on which they desire
protection during emergencies
would do well to have repre
sentation in the local company,
trained to give that protection.
It was stated that even in such
small centers as Cave Junction,
some 60 men regularly attend
drill, a much larger number than
report for the local company.

International Typographical Un
ion, with 65.000 members, had
become reaffiliated with it.
The union, which was one of
the founders of the federation,
had been suspended since 1940
for refusal to pay an increased
per capita tax. The reaffiliatlon,
resulting from a membership ref
erendum, is effective as of Aug.
1 and entitles the I. T. U, to
representation at the A. F. L.
convention in November.
