The 1944 Major league season
may go down in the books as the
year of "hot and cold running
baseball"
Winning and losing streaks
have been the order from the
very first week. Wartime person
nel is regarded as a major fac
tor for the manner in which
clubs suddenly strike it hot and
begin winning games in bunches.
Then, Just as suddenly, the rook
ies and upgraded minor league
players get jittery over the pace
and cool off.
. The streakiest club has been
the Chicago Cubs, now in a losing
slump that has reached four
straight, whereas last week they
were riding an 11-game winning
skein, longest compiled by any
team this year. They dropped 13
in a row early in the season, but
that series of losses was topped
later bv the Brooklyn Dodgers
who were defeated 15 straight
times on their last western trip.
The two longest current
streaks remained intact yester
day with the St. Louis Browns
defeating the Yankees at New
York 3 to 0 for their 10th
straight. The defeat dropped the
Yankees into fourth place. Den
ny Galehouse, who got a late
start because he worked in an
Ohio war plant through the ear
ly part of the season, turned in
his best game to date, a six-hitter,
and gave definite indications
he will be a strong factor in the
Browns' World Series plans.
The Detroit Tigers edged in to
third place by winning their
seventh straight, defeating the
Senators at Washington 3 to 2

The Red Sox stayed six and a
half games behind the Browns,
winning 2 to 1 over the White
Sox at Boston. It was their 14th
victory In 16 starts against Chi
cago this season.
The White Sox engineered a
triple play in the fourth when
Third Baseman Ralph Hodgins
stabbed a liner with the bases
filled, stepped on the bag and
threw to first base.
Cleveland defeated the A's at
Philadelphia 5 to 4 when Myril
'Hoag singled home a run in the
ninth.
Mort Cooper of the Cardinals
won his sixth shutout and his
15th victory, beating the Phila
delphia Phillies at St. Louis 2
to 0, to increase the team's
league lead 18V4 games.
The Boston Braves got good
pitching from Charley Barrett
at Cincinnati to defeat the Reds
2 to 0 for their fourth straight
Victory.
Brooklyn, which failed to win
game on its last western tour,
took its second straight at Chi
cago, edging the cubs 6 to 4 in
the 10th when Pinch Hitter Tom
Warren doubled home'two runs.
New York Giant pitching was
at fault in the Pirates' 10 to 4 de
cision at Pittsburgh.
RED SOX THIRD SACKER

Boston Red Sox expected today
to lose the services of Third
Baseman Jim Tabor, who passed
his pre-inductoin physical exam
ination and will be subject to
army call within 21 days.
Tabor Is the eighth member of
the second place Red Sox sched
uled to enter the armed forces

Free Boxing Bouts Prevent
Absenteeism In Shipyards

Wilmington, Cal., Aug. 11. U.R) An 8.000 gate is pretty
good for the average fight card, but down Wilmington way they
draw that many for only a two-bout each three rounds card,
and the number is kept down to 8,000 only because that's all
the people that can see the fights.

Wilmington fights are free, but
on the other hand, when 8,000
people take the time out of their
25-minute lunch periods to
watch boxers, who generally
don't compare with those in reg
ular rings, that's something.
The 8,000 people are 8,000 of
the California shipyard's 15,000
day shift workers. The place is
the California shipyards.
Wayne Stewart, recreational
director of Calship, was pappa
of the brain storm and it was a
brainstorm more or less whip
ped by the wind of necessity.
As is common knowledge, ab
senteeism is still a problem, and
this problem predominates on
Monday. The idea was to find
something to induce employes to
come to work on Monday, and
Stewart did.
The ring was purchased by
Calship recreation department
and the fights got underway.
The idea is only three weeks
old, but it doesn't look as though
anything will Interfere with its
continuation.
Only two bouts are held each
Monday each is a three-round
bout there is naturally a limi
tation on time.
One of the first problems was
to keep the workers from quit
ting their jobs five or 10 min
utes before lunch to get ringside
seats. An appeal was made to
the workers and the starting
time was moved up to seven
minutes after the beginning of
the lunch period that solved
the problem.
The bouts are no-decision
bouts, generally refereed by
referees from the RooseVelt
naval base, men with experi
ence. The idea is to keep the
fights as exhibitions.
At first the matches were be
tween outside professionals and
Cal-shlppers. Gradually the ten
dency will be to have bouts with
Calshippers only. There is quite
a list of applicants, Stewart
says, but care is being taken to
use only experienced boxers,
preferably those who fight some
other time during the week.
SUPPLY OF.GAME
TAGS EXHAUSTED
No more applications will be
accepted by the Oregon State
Game commission for the fol
lowing special big game tags:
Grant-Baker doe deer; antlerless
elk; or Hart Mountain buck and
doe deer. As the number of ap
plications exceeded the quota of
these tags, drawings were held
on August 2 to determine the
successful applicants.
Everyone will be notified of
the results of the drawings as
fast as the notices can be mailed
out' by the commission, and
those who are to receive tags
will be given ten days from the
date of the notice in which to
forward the required fees.
There are plenty of antelope
tags available and these are now
being issued in the order appli
cations are received. To apply
for an antelope tag it is neces
sary to forward the fee of $2.50
for a resident or $5 for a non
resident, together with informa
tion as to the number and kind
of hunting license held by the
applicant.

in an all-collegian set-to, while
the matron, Mrs. H. M. Sims,
has the tournament's No. 1
chore of stopping a rampaging
titleholder who has won three
straight rounds with whirlwind
finishes.
The Sims - Germain match
brings up the old conflict of
age vs. youth. Admitting she is
"a little over 32," Mrs. Sims'
entry into the semi-finals of this
44-year-old tournament climax
es a comback after a year's
absence from golf. She was
Minnesota amateur queen in
1941 when she was living at St.
Paul, and during the next two
years she gave promise of de-
peloping into one of the west
ern's top stars. Mother of a 16-months-old

Disqualification Is becoming a
habit with Tony Morelli, the
number one bad character of
this grappling circuit.
A month ago he fouled out to
Paavo Katonen when he bopped
the latter over the dome with a
pop bottle. Last week he lost to
Herb Parks when he scraped a
rubber stamp across the Parks
eyes. t
He came up with a new one in
the armory last night, the han
dle of a water faucet, which he
had taped to his knee disguised
as an injury.
Facing Jack Lipscomb In one
half of a double main event,
Morelli employed this weapon
to pound Lipscomb in the small
of the back until Referee Earl
Yoakley tore off the tape and
discovered the piece of metal.
That was that, and Lipscomb
was awarded the match.
It was a brawl from start to
finish, with Lipscomb taking a
fall iu four minutes with a press
after punishing Morelli consid
erably. Tony took the next tum
ble two and a half minutes later
with a press, which he set up by
pulling Lipscomb to the canvas
by his hair.
In the other half of the main
event, Katonen and Ernie Piluso
went to a fall-apiece draw in a
sparkling match that brought
out about every scientific ma
neuver in the book.

later Piluso used his skull-aching
headlock to even the score.
