"Just folks": At a certain
street corner sits an old man,
surrounded by stacks of news
papers. To call him a 'newsboy"
seems impertinence to me yet
passers-by refer to him as such.
His teeth are uncared for; he
needs a bath, to tell you the
truth, he needs three baths. Yet
his language has an almost clas
sic purity; he quotes Pliny and
Homer and makes them come to
life so that their beliefs and
philosophies are no longer an
cient but modem. He belongs
on a college faculty, rather than
on a street corner; provided, of
course, that he first took a bath.

were twin stars at the thought
of what New York holds in store
for her. Her passionate belief in
this gave me an ache inside,
though I didn't know Just why.
The garbage man, coming at

a bridge table set on the lawn
where the clack of my type

was from Italy and is saving his
money to buy a farm. I listened
to his dreams about this farm
in hopes that he would return
the courtesy by listening to my
dreams for hillsides. He did.
