food, is itself the cause oi any
disease or serious trouble. It Is
certainly not a cause of decay
of the teeth in children or ad
ults, in my opinion. I do not be
lieve excessive consumption of
sugar by child or adult can be
considered a cause of diabetes.
But I am equally certain that
the excessive consumption of
sugar is to Dlame for a grent
deal of serious nutritional defi
ciency in childhood, adolescence
and early adult life, for the in
dividual who gets a large part
of his daily quota of calorics

enough of the natural protective
foods to supply the minimum
amounts of minerals and vita
mins required for good nutri
tion and normal functional ef
ficiency Now I like sugar In my tea
or coffee, cookies, cake, candy.
Ice cream and the like as well as
the next fellow But knowing
what little I do know about nu
trition and nealth. I am always
conscious of the need for bal
ancing such Indulgence either
by a fairly liberal Intake of
natural protective foods or by
taking the nect-ssary minerals
, and vitamins as a supplement
to my diet or both.
Among the best protective
foods are milk, cheese (of course
I mean real cheese, not proc
essed stuff palmed off on the
unsophisticated customer under
name that suggests choose),
butter, eggs, greens, raw vege
tables, fruits, nuts.
To- parents of growing chil
dren I suggest plain fresh milk
or milk and cream or skim milk
or buttermilk or sour milk or
milk flavored with chocolate,
cocoa, malt or the like, and fresh

Mr. Richardson, who died in
1919, "always found tftne to do
useful and constructive com
munity service," despite his ex
tensive business interests.
The life of Lunsford Richard
son was a veritable romance of
American enterprise and public
service. Born in Johnston coun
ty, N. C, December 20. 1854, he
graduated from Davidson col
lege in 1873, an honor man of
his class.
For four years, he taught
school to discharge the debts In
curred In his education. His par
ents had both died when he was
a small boy.
Becoming discouraged with
the teaching profession, he set
out to found a career in business.
This he began in the little town
of Selma, N. C, In 1880.

RULES FOR' MAIL
Japanese authorities have Just
announced specific changes in
instructions for addressing mall
to prisoners of war and civilian
Internees held by that govern
ment, according to word re
ceived by the American Red
Cross from the International
Committee, It was announced to
day by Mrs. Ned Rankin, execu
tive secretary of the Jackson
county chapter.
If the prisoner's or civilian In
ternee's camp address Is known
mail should bo addressed to the
Individual, by his full name, in
the particular camp, via New
York, N. Y. If the prisoner's
camp address Is unknown but
he is definitely known to be a
prisoner of war held by Japan,
or if the civilian internee's ad
dress Is unknown, and he is
known to be Interned in Jap
anese overseas and occupied
territory, mail should be ad
dressed In care of Huyro Johok
yoku, via New York, N. Y. The
Japanese Red Cross has stated
that correspondence addressed
to a known camp will be re
forwarded if the addressee has
moved to a new camp. Persons
desiring further information con
cerning addressing of messages
to Japanese prisoners are asked
to contact the local Red Cross
office.
New postal card forms for
prisoner of war mail to the Far
East, .printed by the American
Red Cross, have been received
by the Jackson county chapter,
Mrs. Rankin states, and are now
available for relatives anJ
friends of Japanese-held Ameri
cans. Since Japan has refused
to accept letters of more than
24 words for prisoners, the postal
card is designed to hold a mes
sage of this length.
The card, which requires no
postage, will facilitate censor
ship and save weight and space
in transportation, Mrs. Rankin
says. Its use is optional, but it
is hoped that It will speed up de
livery. Mrs. Rankin reports that 28
to 30 Jackson county men are
prisoners of war, 18 of the num-'
ber reported imprisoned in the
Far East.
Washed Out Pilot
Takes Army Plane
For Mexico Trip
Williams Field, Ariz., Aug.
10 (U.R) Richard L. Bailey, 23,
Brighton, Colo., recently wash
ed out as an aviation cadet, to
day was reported missing by Lt.
Col. Earl W. Worley, deputy of
training and operations, after
taking off on an unauthorized
flight to Mexico.
Col. Worley said Mexican of
ficials had advised him that a
Williams Field advanced single
engine training plane crashed
near Guasave, Mex., Aug. 5, and
that the pilot had parachuted to
safety.
After the crash, the pilot made
his way to. Guasave, where he
borrowed 100 pesos from natives
and boarded a northbound plane.
The parachute, which was re
covered, bore the name of
Bailey, Col. Worley said. AH'

had been accounted for.
