Pork Loins, Hams, Canned
Fish Back on Ration List;
Low Cuts Beef, Lamb Off

Heavy demands on the nation's
supply of pork and canned sea
food today prompted the Office
of Price Administration to re
turn all pork loins, "hams and
canned fish to the ration list, ef
fective Sunday.
At the same time, "utility"
grades (low grades) of beef and
lamb will be made point-free.
Values of creamery butter and
processed foods will remain the
same. Points will be Increased,
however, for cheeses and so
called farm or country-type and
process butter.
Supply Decline
OPA Chief Chester Bowles
said point values for the choice
cuts of pork loins and hams
were restored because of a sea
sonal decline in supply and
heavy buying by the armed serv
ices and civilians.
The new pork values range
from four to eight points per
pound for loins and two to nine
points 'for hams.. Whole hams
average five points per pound.
The new point-free status for
utility beef was announced last
week.
Point values for "commercial,"
"good" and "choice" beef steaks
and roasts will continue at their
present high level, OPA said,
because "many areas are in
short supply." Other beef cuts,
such as short ribs, plates, bris
kets and shanks, continue point
free In all grades.
Bowles said utility grades of
lamb were made point-free be
cause it was feared that such
cuts would not sell with similar
beef grades off the ration list.
Fish Shortage
Return of canned fish to ra
tioning was prompted by short
ages in nearly all parts of the
country. The more popular va
rieties salmon, bonito, shrimp,
tuna and yellowtail were set
at six points per pound; mack
erel and sardines at four points
and canned oysters and miscella
neous products at two points.
Values of cheeses were in
creased because civilians are
buying faster than allowable un
der the allocated supply.
Cheddar and Colby cheeses
were raised to 12 points, cream
and Neufchatel to six, and Swiss,
limburger and Italian to eight.
The changes in the current ra
tion list were two weeks late in
coming out due to a disagree
ment between OPA and the War
Food Administration over re
moval of better beef cuts from
rationing. The new values will
continue through Sept. 2, end of
the August ration period.
The OPA also announced that
another 10-point red stamp DS
would be validated next Sun
day and would be good indefi

Wash. peel, and remove pita from 4
pounds fully ripe peaches: (jrind she
fruit. Measure exactly 4 level cup of
the ground peaches (add water to fUl
out last cup, If necessary) In a Urge
kettle. Add the M CP. Pectin and
lemon uice, stir well and bring to
boil, stirring constantly. NOW, add
the sugar (which has been previously
measured), continue stirring, and bring
to a full rolling boil. BOIL EXACTLY

Broad investment demand for
utility shares, which made a
new high for more than four
years, lifted the main list of
stocks today fractions to more
than a point. Trading expanded
moderately on the movement.
Buying in utility stocks was
described in Wall Street as
"real investment demand" and
attributed to belated realization
that the power and light indus
try has virtually no reconver
sion problems to solve with end
of the war. Furthermore, the
industry faces good peacetime
prospects.

SINATRA AND COHORTS
SUED BY SONG WRITER

Frank Sinatra and 13 other de
fendants including Songwriter
Jimmy McHugh today were
sued for J100.000 each for al
legedly plagiarizing "You're
Mine to Love," written by Jack
Trizio and Chuck Bennett.
The composers contended
they turned the manuscript
over to Sinatra for his opinion
and that he in turn gave It to
Songwriter Jimmy McHugh.
The plaintiffs said McHugh in
corporated portions of the lyrics
into "The Music Stopped"
which the "voice" features In
his film "higher and higher."

tier reports said today that Ger
man execution squads have put
to death the wives, children,
parents, other relatives and
even the intimate friends of the
eight German army officers
hanged in Berlin Tuesday for
complicity in the abortive plot
against Adolf Hitler.
The executions of the rela
tives, in some cases extending
to cousins, were carried out
Tuesday, informants said, pre
sumably simultaneously with or
within a few hours of the death
on the gallows of Marshal Er
win Von Witzleben and seven
other officers for treason in con
spiring to set up a peace gov
ernment in Germany.
Many other German civilians
also were understood to have
been placed on trial for com
plicity in the plot and it was
believed that' their fate would
be disclosed in an official com
munique expected to be issued
soon.

resolution endorsing President
Roosevelt and Sen. Harry S.
Truman was adopted today by
the 11th annual American News
paper Guild (CIO) convention
by a vote of 153 2 '3 to 73 13.
The resolution, which was in
troduced by John T. McManus,
New York, urged guild mem
bers to make every possible ef
fort to elect the Democratic can
didates. Milton Murray, Detroit, guild
president, told the delegates that
their Indiv'dual action would not
be bound by the endorsement.
"We are not enslaving our
members," he said. "Our num
bers still retain their freedom
of political thought and their
right to vote as American citi

Netherlands as soon as that
country is freed from the Ger
mans and will Join the fiRht in
the Pacific, Netherlands Consul

army would fight wherever
needed.

forces from their bridgehead on
the southern bank of the A mo
river east of Florence today,

head south of the Arno, a pocket
of about five square miles 11
miles west of Florence, where

Bor, leader of the Polish under
ground army battling the Ger
mans for possession of Warsaw,
broadcast an appeal for imme
diate, large-scale help today, and
said that if it was not forth
coming his forces and Warsaw's
population faced "total exter
mination." (Germans admitted for the
first time today that Bor's forces
"initially scored a number of
successes in the uprising at
tempt," but claimed that the
Polish capital was "again firm
ly in German hands." The dis

Five hundred of 1800 German
prisoners of war at the Stock
ton Army Ordnance depot start
ed a sit down strike today after
being ordered Monday to work
nine hours a day.
The prisoners, who work at
non-essential Jobs at the depot
and at Lathrop and near Tracy,
Cal., previously worked an
eight-hour day. Terms of the
Geneva convention provide that
prisoners of war may be work
ed a maximum of 12 hours per
day.
The 500 men sat down inside
the enclosure at the depot this
morning and refused to work,

county assessor's office and
some delay is being experienced
due to the Josephine county de
lay in submitting data in which
