response to an inquiry by the
California encampment of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Reynolds released a 10-page
letter addressed to a VTW board
of inquiry which meets at San
Francisco tonight pursuant to a
resolution adopted by the an
nual encampment in June.

Sen. Chapman Revercomb, R.,
W. Va., asserted in the senate
today that the Murray-Kilgore
demobilization bill would estab
lish a virtual national service
act over unemployed workers.
Revercomb led off the second
day of senate demobilization de
bate on the issue of whether
u n e m ployment compensation
should be left to the states or
turned ovey to the federal gov
ernment. The fight moved swift
ly with prospects of a senate
vote as early as tomorrow.
Too Much Power -
Revercomb objected to the
broad powers which the Murray-Kilgore
bill would give to a
so-called work administrator
who would direct retraining and
re-employment of veterans and
civilians for two years after the
war.
Sen. James E. Murray, D.,
Mor.t., said he was prepared to
offer "clarifying and modifying
amendments" to that section of
the bill, but Revercomb insisted
on challenging the measure as
it stood before the sepate at the
time.
Revercomo and other senate
Republicans, as well as conserv
ative Democrats, favor a demob
ilization bill by Sen. Walter F.
George, D., Ga., which would
leave unemployment compensa
tion in state hands. He said the
Murray-Kilgore bill would give
the work administrator almost
unlimited power to recruit,
transport, and assign unemploy
ed workers.

$35 a week, Revercomb said,

would "place a premium on un
employment and be an induce
ment to people to avoid work."
He said that under the bill it
would be possible for a person
who worked only three months
and earned $600 within the year
to draw unemployment benefits
up to $1,820 a year for two
years provided he could not find
a "suitable" job.

bat flying in the Burma-India
theater will be worn tonight as
a wedding dress by his bride,
Miss Leona Burton.
"My bride is going to get
married in this," McCarten told
fellow officers when he reached
headquarters safely after bailing
out at 10,000 feet from his bomb
er over India jungles last year.
He brought the parachute
back and turned it over to Miss
Burton who commissioned her
dressmaker to metamorphose the
shapeless white folds into a suit
able gown.
"I'm glad he wasn't equipped
with a red 'chute like some fly
ers have," Miss Burton said to
day.
GREYHOUND BUS
DRIVERS STRIKE
Portland, Aug. 9. (U.R) Over
land Greyhound bus travel be
tween Portland and Pendleton,
Ore., was at a standstill today,
with drivers reportedly in dis
pute as to who should operate
second sections for peak travel
on the regular Columbia river
schedule.
Company officials announced
they had not been informed by
union drivers as to the nature of
the dispute.
Night busses arrived in Port
land from Pendleton and Spo
kane this morning but no cars
left from any of the stations
thereafter. Since the company
operates the only line between
Portland and Pendleton, passen
ger traffic was stalled while
temporary agreements were
made to use trains.
Passengers jammed the term
inals seeking transportation.
Cities affected by the stoppage
were Portland, Hood River, The
Dalles, Arlington, Umatilla and
Pendleton.

delphia transportation strikers
in choosing to obstruct the war
effort "on a comparatively un
important question involving
eight negroes out of some 6,500
workers."
Biddle promised that the
army would insure the upgrad
ing of some Philadelphia Trans
portation company negro em
ployes to trolley motormen, the
issue of the strike, and declared
his . office would see that a
"thorough, searching investiga
tion" is conducted before the
Philadelphia federal grand jury
which began deliberation today.
Would Shed Light
"We are going to call every
federal official, company official
and city official, in addition to
the strikers and their leaders,
who can shed light on just what
was done to prevent this strike
before it started," Biddle said.
The attorney general suggest
ed that the facilities of the de
partment of justice in its end
less war against monopoly and
trusts could well be used in the
coming struggle for continued
development of western indus
try after the war.
Coast Problems Cited
"I think one of the great prob
lems on the west coast is that
you have the task of seizing the
opportunity to develop western
industry with the help of your
vast water power resources.
"Against you in this battle
you have aligned (1) certain
eastern capital which wants to
maintain the east's control on
industry, (2) discr i min a t o r y
freight rates, and (3) all cartel
and monopoly agreements which
tend to "freeze" almost all in
dustrial development in the east
where it has been concentrated

Central News Agency reported
today that Japanese heavy artil
lery pounded Chinese positions
inside Hengyang yestcre'ry, re
futing enemy claims of having
captured the city, although Chin
ese military authorities aban
doned hope of holding the key
junction on the Hankow-Canton
railway.
One military source said radio
communications with Hengyang
had been cut since yesterday
morning and described the situa
tion there as "obscuro."
Say Americans Taken
(A Tokvo broadcast, heard by
United Press in San Francisco,
claimed that several of 70 Amer
ican liason officers were cap
tured at Hengyang, which the
Japanese reported was con
quered finally Mondry.
(Tokyo said that with occupa
tion of Hengyang, Japanese
forces would start an Immediate
offensive against Kwcilln, capi
tal of Kwangsl province, 180
miles southwest of Hengyang.)
Central said the Hengyang
commander. Fang Hslcn-Chueh,
who notified Generalissimo
Chiang Kai-shek two days ago
that he would hold out until
death, personally was leading
his remaining troops In hand-to-hand
fighting in the city's
streets.
In what he said might be his
last message, Fang reported that
his troops had been killed "vir
tually to the last man," by the
Japanese who broke Into the
city Monday morning.
