Milk and milk products are,
and, as I see it, naturally should
be, the chief source of certain
e s sentials of
good nutrition
short age of
which is re
sponsible for
much if not
most of the
physical defi-
c i e n c i es of
American chil
d r e n, youths
and adults.
These essen
tials are (1)
Brad? calcium and
phosphorus (there is a physio
logical balance between calci
um and phosphorus metabol
ism) (2) vitamins A. D and G
(B2, Riboflavin), and (3) the
complete proteins, that is, pro
teins containing the amino acids
required to maintain life and
promote growth.
Some physicians who con
ceive such on antipathy to milk
remind us of those "vegetar
ians" who do not exclude fish,
eggs, fowl, game etc. from their
diet. Few objectors to milk
would exclude also cream, but
ter, and cheese.
One correspondent Informs
me that I should know better
than to tell people with sinus
trouble to drink milk, for "milk
forms mucus" and that Is an
other name for sinus trouble.
Another reader says he has Ben
Told persons with chronic si
nusitis should not drink milk,
as sinusitis is usually allergic
and milk is one of the worst of
fenders in allergy. Plenty of
calcium is all right, this reader
concedes, but not in the form of
milk or other foods to which
the persons may be allergic.
Milk is a pretty common food,
so it Is understandable that a
good many persons may be al
lergic to it. But It wou d be
silly for any one with sinus
trouble or anything resembling
sinus trouble to exclude milk
from the diet without havinff
determined accurately that he
or she is allergic to milk. If
specific skin tests or the diet
elimination test shows one is
allergic to milk, then it would1

continue eating cream, butter,
cheese without making certain
that there is no allergic sensi
tivity to these milk products.
It seems questionable, to me,
that the diet or allergy has any
thing to do with acute sinusitis'
(which I believe is wholly a
matter of respiratory infection)
or with the serious form of
chronic sinusitis which becomes
so grave as to require surgical
drainage.
On the other hand, I have
been impressed by the number
of readers who have reported
lasting relief from "sinus trou
ble" they have experienced
from high calcium diet and cal
cium feeding, and the prompt
symptomatic relief they obtain
from potassium chloride. I be
lieve a good many if not most
cases of so-called chronic sinus
trouble are allergic. Readers
who desire further Instructions
send stamped self-addressed en
velope for pamphlet "Relief for
Allergy," and if you want also
the pamphlet "The Calcium
Shortage", which covers high
calcium diet and calcium feed
ing, inclose ten cents for it. At
least this is harmless for any
sufferer from chronic sinus
trouble to try out for a few
months and I hope those who
try it will report their experi
ence, whether they are pleased
or disappointed, in either event
mentioning just how long the
high calcium diet and calcium
feeding has been followed. This
is not medicine, it must be re
membered, and can scarcely be
expected to bring immediate re
sults. It is food and so any
trial shorter than months is
hardly worth while.

mans have begun withdrawing
troops from southern Finland,

At a conference today Izac
proposed to navy department of
ficials and west coast Chamber
of Commerce representatives
that war plant officials in the
area assure workers that they
will be readily absorbed in
peace production as soon as the
war ends.
Izac said he has been Informed
by navy officials that the west
coast shipbuilding program has
not reached its peak and that no
cutbacks Tare planned for at least
