61 FIRES SET ON
STATE PROTECTED
LAND BY BOLTS
A total of 81 fires. 61 set by
lightning, have been reported on
state protected lands during the
past two weeks, it was an
nounced todav by A. D. McRey
nolds. state forest patrol head.
Remainder of the blazes, mostly
small, were set by spreading
debris fires, camp fires, smok
ers and other causes. McRev
nolds states, and were on farm
as well as on forest lands.
At one time, July 28. 47 fires
were burning at the same time,
the state forester declared, the
severe lightning storm of the
nieht before having been respon
sible for the greater number.
Some 26 acres of land was
burned over during the period,
he said, the largest blaze cover
ing some 15 and one-half acres
in the Anderson creek district.
Last fire handled by the
patrol was one yesterday which
destroyed the two-story home of
the Lloyd Walsh family a short
distance east of Eagle Point in
the Antelope district. The blaze
started from the flue, according
to the patrol report, and loss,
with no insurance, was said to
be about $3,500.
McReynolds made an appeal
to everyone to be extremely
careful during coming weeks,
with fire hazards increasing with
every day of warm weather. He
pointed out that the showers
bring . sense of false security,
since .he summer rains are very
spotty and most of the county
remains untouched and dry. All
of the recent man-caused fires
on state protected lands were
preventable, he said, and urged
greater caution by everyone.

SOCIAL SECURITY
More Than 706,526 Oregon
Persons Have Acct. Cards
Wage Data Accurate.
More than 706,526 men and
women in the state of Oregon
now have social security ac
count cards. In the years to
come, many of these workers
will reach the age of 65, retire
from their jobs and claim pay
ments of old-age insurance.
Others will die, leaving depend
ents who are entitled to bene
fits under the Social Security
Act. Every worker wants to be
sure that he will get the right
insurance checks when he
grows old, or that his family
will receive the right checks
in the right amount, if he dies.
Charles L. Maginnis, manager
of the Klamath Falls office said
that care and attention to this
matter of keeping the records
straight, now, might very well
mean the difference between
the right payments and the
wrong payments of benefits,
later on.
Individual Accounts
He explained that an individ
ual account is kept for each
worker whose name appears on
the books of the Social Security
Board. The worker's name and
number that is assigned to him
by the Board are printed at the
top of his ledger sheet and also
written on record cards that are
kept on file.
Maginnis stressed the fact
that wage data must be accur
ate, because the amount of ben
efits to be paid to each qualified
claimant is based on a wage
record. That is why the Social
Security Board takes extra pre
caution to safeguard the social
security account of every wage
earner listed on its books. It
is also the reason why every
employer subject to the law
must include in his social secur
ity quarterly tax report to the
government the name, the social
security account number, and
the wage earnings of each work
er he employs. But before the
employer can include this data
in his report, he must have the
information himself. Therefore,
the employee must make sure
that his employer has the neces
sary information.

Wall Street
New York, Aug. 3. (U.R)
Stocks dropped fractions to
more than a point today after a
momentary period of firmness
Immediately after the opening.
Selling developed following
the statement of WPB Chief
Donald M. Nelson that only 48
per cent of the $69,000,000,000
war production program for
1944 had been completed by
July 1 and his warning against
false optimism that "the war
production Job is already fin
ished." In the light of his warning,
Wall Street quarters anticipated
a check in plans for reconver
sion and slackening of the con
gressional drive to formulate
legislation speeding up the
changeover to civilian output.
Another factor in the scale
down was the prediction of Na
tional City Bank of New York
that 1944 corporate net Income
probably will be $2,000,000,000
under late 1943 expectations of
the U. S. treasury.

Gun in Action
-
London, Aug. 3. (U.R) Tur
key rushed defense preparations
today as a precaution against a
German attack In retaliation for
the rupture of their relations.
Ankara dispatches said 100 or
more German intelligence
agents had been rounded up by
Turkish authorities and told of
batteries of anti-aircraft guns
being hauled through the streets
of the capital.
The national assembly, after
approving the rupture yesterday
pushed through to the commit
tee stage a bill providing for
the evacuation of women and
children from large cities in the
event of air raids or other at
tacks. German foreign office circles
warned soon after Turkey an
nounced the break in diplomatic
and economic relations, that a
continuation of the new Turkish
policy "will of necessity lead to
war with Germany."
The assembly took- immediate
steps to implement its new
found solidarity with the allies
by jamming through all Its
stages a bill granting amnesty
to Ame, lean, British and Rus
sian nationals Imprisoned for or
accused of security violations
during Turkey's period of neu
trality. George Pavloff and Leonid
Korniloff, Russians imprisoned
on charges of attacking German
Ambassador Baron Franz von
Papen In February 1942, will be
released Friday.
Von Papen left Turkey by
plane yesterday afternoon and
Berlin announced that the Turk
ish charge d'affaires would have
to leave the German capital by
this morning.
