Shortages in 320 vital categories
of war material are threatening
to delay victory and increase the
toll of lives which victory will
cost, Lt. Gen. Brehon Somervell,
commander of the army service
forces, said today.
In 90 of these categories, Som
ervell told a press conference,
supplies on hand constitute less
than 50 per cent of minimum re
quirements. Allied battle successes and the

stepped up the requirements for
weapons, ammunition and trans
port, while actual production has
declined, he said.
He said peak production for
the army service forces was
reached In November, 1943,
amounting to $2,122,000,000.

to be met, Somervell said, pro
duction amount'ng to $2,308,
000,000 must be reached in Octo
ber. Somervell laid the shortages
mainly to problems of man

ed his republican presidential campaign in Illinois today with
a charge that Gerald L. K. Smith, America First leader, was
a race-baiting rabble rouser comparable to Adolf Hitler and
was seeking to "smear" Gov. John W. Bricker, of Ohio, the
GOP vice-presidential candidate.

nouncement that the latter's
more or less phantom America
First party had nominated
Smith for president and Bricker
for vice-president. The report
got Dewey's first and urgent at
tention when he arrived here at
11:05 a. m., CWT, on a cam
paign organization swing which
took him into Pennsylvania
yesterday and will lead him to
St. Louis tomorrow.

At a press conference he read
the following statement: "Ger
ald Smith is one of those rabble
rousers who, like Adolf Hitler,
makes racial prejudice his stock
in trade. This contemptible at
tempt to associate himself with
Gov. Bricker is a sinister effort
to smear the republican candi
date for vice-president."
The America First party ac
tion came after a series of blasts
by Smith against Dewey, includ
ing a suggestion that he resign
the presidential nomination and
permit Bricker, to take over.
Smith is a former Protestant
preacher who joined the forces
of the late Huey P. Long in
Louisiana and subsequently has
been variously attached to the
Townsend Old Age Pension
movement and in collaboration
with the forces of the Rev.
Charles E. Coughlin.
He is a powerful orator with
the ability to persuade his lis
teners to drop money-
money in the hat after hearing
him.

America First group in nomi
nating him as the running mate
to Gerald L. K. Smith in Detroit
yesterday was "ridiculous."
"I will not accept such a ri
diculous offer," Bricker said.
"I shall not permit myself to be
used in any such connection."

The girl (Bobby said she was

"My, they're pretty," she said,
