9,000 Miles In Week

With U. S. Pacific Fleet in
the Western Pacific (U.R) Triple
the average number of letters
received by the average citizen
of Indianapolis, for instance,
and you have a rough ..idea of
the postal problem the Navy
faced when the. Central Pacific
front surged westward 4,000
miles from Pearl Harbor to the
Marianas via the Gilberts and
Marshal Is.
The Navy solved the complex

Now it isn't, unusual for air
mail letters posted, in New York
City on a Sunday to be in the
hands of a serviceman in the
Marshall islands 0,000 miles
away just a week later. In the
Gilberts airmail letters from
home are being received regu
larly in three to four days. The
standing record in the Mar
shall is four days from Vir
ginia. To Chance, a postal inspector
for 25 years in his home city
went the job of setting up ma
chinery to get the mail to men
at the front. Since October,
1942, he has flown nearly 60,

"The average post office
knows approximately where its
patrons can be found," Chance
explained, "but out here men
move around with such light
ning speed we must anticipate
their movements and then get

Nef f Home From Convention
Says Wallace Talk Costly
Henry A. Wallace showed him
self to be a poor politician when
he came out for the abolishment
of the poll tax and equal rights
for Negroes during the recent
Democratic national convention
in Chicago, in the opinion of
Porter J. Neff, one of Oregon's
delegates to the convention.
Neff, Medford lawyer who re
turned home yesterday, said that
Wallace lost all chance to be re
nominated for vice president
when he brought up the poll tax
question in his seconding speech
for the renominatlon of Presi
dent Roosevelt. By calling for
the abolition of the poll tax, he
said, Wallace lost all the south
ern votes. . .
The Oregon delegation " was
harmonious, Neff stated, and
voted unanimously for Wallace
on the first ballot, having felt
themselves committed to such
the mail there ahead of them."
Followed Forces
Mail deliveries have reached
a peak of efficiency in the for
ward area of the Ceneral Pacif
ic theater. At Tarawa ships car
rying postal details were so close
behind the assault forces that
their crews watched the pre
invasion bombardment.
With the Invasion forces at
Saipan was an LST carrying a
fleet post-office unit. Delivery
of mail to servicemen aboard
assault ships began four days
after the invasion. Two' days
later seaplanes were rushing
the first airmail to the Marianas
and four days later service was
under way for troops ashore.
In spite of the care and speed
with which the mail is handled
the fleet records office has thou
sands of undelivered letters
which were improperly or il
legibly addressed. For instance,
there are 11,000 Smiths in the
Pacific fleet, Chance disclosed,
suggesting that addresses should
include service numbers.
COURT VACATION IS
PLANNED IN AUGUST
Circuit Judge H. K. Hanna
plans to take a vacation during
August, the month in which the
state court and circuit courts re
cess. The local circuit court
docket has been completed, with
cases on the calendar tried. A
number of cases are pending,
and will probably be set for the
October term of court.
Judge Hanna also will work
on decisions and routine matters
before him. Since assuming the
bench four years ago he has
taken no formal vacation. '
STORM IN CHAMBER
Ottawa, Aug. 1 (U.R) One
of the most stormy parliamen
tary sessions since World War
One was climaxed last night in
the temporary expulsion from
the chamber of Dr. Herbert
Bruce, former lieutenant gen
eral of Ontario and a progres
sive conservative member, for
criticizing a bill as a "piece of
political bribery."

inated, 11 of Oregon's 14 dele
gates again voted for Wallace,
two for Truman and one for Jus
tice William Douglas.
Neff said that, in his opinion,
Quentin Reynolds made the best
speech at the convention, which
saw the largest crowd in his
tory pack the Chicago stadium.
He said that delegates were very
well treated, that prices were
moderate everywhere and that
there was no suggestion of stores
and restaurants "holding up" the
visitors.
Mrs. Neff accompanied her
husband as far as Minneapolis,
where she visited a sister during
the convention. Both also vis
ited friends and relatives in Du
luth, where they formerly lived.
They were gone from Medford a
little over three weeks.

quarters of the army's Alaskan
department announced that be
ginning today no permits will be
necessary for civilians entering,
leaving or traveling in the Alas
kan mainland, southeast Alaska
or Kodiak island.
Although virtually removing
restrictions for most of the terri
tory, the army said regulations
will remain effective in the
Aleutian islands and through
most of the Alaskan peninsula
with the dividing line placed at
Becharof lake south of Naknek.
Entry of enemy aliens, per
sons of Japanese ancestry, fam
ilies of military personnel sta
tioned in the territory, and per
sons previously excluded from
Alaska will still require prior
approval of the commanding
general of the department, it
was announced.
VINEGAR JOE NAMED
FOR FULL GENERAL

Lt. Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell,
commander of American forces
in the China-Burma-India the
ater, was nominated today to be
a full general in keeping with
the increasing emphasis on the
war against Japan.
Stilwell will be the U .S.
army's sixth full general on
active duty. The others are
Gens. George C. Marshall, chief
of staff; H. H. Arnold, command
er of the army air forces; Dwight
C. Eisenhower; supreme com
mander of allied European in
vasion forces; Douglas MacAr
thur, supreme commander of al
lied forces In the southwest Pa
cific, and Malin Craig, former
chief of staff, who was recalled
from retirement to head the
army personnel board here.

French civilians In Normandy,
on the whole, are friendly to
American and British invasion
troops despite the terrible dev
astation wrought by the fighting
and the intense suffering they
are undergoing, Capt. Edward C.
Kelly said in a letter to his wife,
who resides at 430 Haven street.
Capt. Kelly, with a European
civil affairs detachment, wrote
that plenty of action has been
taking place in the vicinity in
which he is located, and that he
has seen many German planes
shot down by Allied anti-aircraft
fire.
He wrote that he has been
living in a pup tent and that
heavy rainfall made things very
uncomfortable. He also said that
he saw evidence of robot bomb
explosions In England before
leaving there and that one land
ed near the camp in which he
was stationed. Capt. Kelly, Med
ford lawyer prior to entering the
service, arrived in England last
February 1.
DAV Convention
To Give Veteran
Most Attention

L. Monahan of St. Paul, Minn.,
national commander of the Dis
abled American Veterans, ar
rived in Denver today to make
advance preparations for the
national convention here, Sept.
12-15.
Delegates from more than
900 DAV chapters throughout
the nation will attend the con
vention which, Monahan said,
will be "streamlined and re
stricted exclusively to business
programs."
Principal business of the 23rd
annual conclave, he said, will
be pledged toward the "protec
tion of American fighting men
and women disabled in World
War II."
JUVENILES HEED THREAT
TO CURB NIGHT GADDING
The sheriff's office reported
today no juveniles were found
out after curfew hours last
night following a threat to take
the names and addresses of boys
and girls out late and notify
their parents or guardians. On
a second offense narpnt nr
guardian would be hailed Into
court, along with the Juveniles,
the officers promised.
Complaints were also re
ceived of boys speeding autos
on city streets and country
roads and ignoring traffic lights
when the travel was light.

TAKEN BY DEATH
Mrs. Hilda Nygren, 83, a resi
dent of southern Oregon for 38
years, living most of that time in
the Brownsboro and Lake Creek
districts, passed away in Med
ford Tuesday. Mrs. Nygren was
born in Smaland, Sweden, Jan.
10, 1861. She came to the United
States in 1889, settling at Love
land, Colo., and was united In
marriage to Gust Nygren at Fort
Collins, Colo., on November 6,
1890. They came to Jackson
county in 1906.
She is survived by one daugh
ter, Mrs. Anna Hulsey, of Klam
ath Falls; three sons, Frank Ny
gren, Brownsboro; Eric and Carl
Nygren, Lake Creek; also three
grandchildren and one brother,
Frank Sundberg of Johnstown,
Colo.
Funeral arrangements, In
charge of Perl Funeral Home,
will be announced later.
Playwright Doubts
Ham Fish Eager To
Air Case In Court
New City, N. Y., Aug. 1 (U.R)
Maxwell Anderson, playwright,
and other members of the good
government ' committee of the
29th congressional district said
today that Rep. Hamilton Fish's
announcement that he would
sue them for libel was so much
"bluff and blather."
Greeting the Fish statement as
"wonderful new s," Anderson
said he and his committee had
"little hope of getting Mr. Fish
into a courtroom he knows per
fectly . well that we have said
nothing that is not true and in
the record."
The congressman. In revealing
that he would sue, challenged
Wendell L. Willkie, who offered
to defend Anderson, to accept
service of complaint In the suit
to "avoid the delay in serving so
many defendants."
Fish objected to an advertise
ment which appeared in the Ny
ack Journal-News, linking his
name with Fritz Kuhn, convicted
leader of the German-American
Bund, and others with known
un-American leanings. He said
the advertisement had "not one
iota of truth to it as it Is merely
part of a baseless smear cam
paign.
