agree with her.
Vitamin G (riboflavin), of
which milk is the richest food
factor, is essential to preserve
the health of the skin and the
hair and the eyes. In animals
deprivation of this vitamin pro
duces cataract there is no pos
itive evidence that riboflavin
(vitamin G, vitamin B2 of the
B-complex) prevents or, helps to
clear up cataract in man, but II
I had anything like beginning
cataract I'd make it my business
to get an optimal daily ration of
vitamin B-complex, particularly
riboflavin. And a quart of milk
every day, too.
Daily consumption of not less
than a quart of milk is nearly as
important as keeping all teeth
In commission, for any one who
wishes to keep young and live,
not just exist his or her life ex
pectancy. The average length
of life in American people is
now (1942) 64.82 years a gain
of 18V4 years since 1900. After
attaining the age of 65 years
(retirement age) the average
person may now count on 13.12
years more these are actual
statistics on which life insur
ance are based. In the face of
these figures we must dismiss
any notions we have cherished
that the old timers attained old
age more generally than people
do today. Truth is that a far
larger proportion of the entire
population attain old age than
ever before since actual records
replaced hearsay and fancy.
"When the' food Is poor In
vitamin G" (riboflavin, of which
milk is the richest food source)
"for any considerable length of
time", wrote Prof. H. C. Sher
man, one of the foremost au
thorities, "digestive disturb
ances, nervous depression, gen
eral weakness and deterioration
of tone, and an unhealthy con
dition of the skin are apt to de
velop; the incidence of infec
tious disease is likely to be in
creased, vitality diminished,
life shortened, and the period
when life is at its prime great
ly curtailed by the early devel
opment of the physical condi
tion of old age."
All that for want of a quart
of milk a day?
So the nutrition authorities
say. And Ol' Doc Brady heart
ily concurs. I might even add
that that is not the half of it
some good nutrition authorities
believe a quart of milk a day is
essential for the growing child,
youth or young adult, but that
a person of mature age may
require only a pint a day to
keep in fine fettle.
It is simple enough, then. All
you have to do is keep or get
all your teeth or your dentist's,
or at least 28 of them if you
have never cut your wisdom
teeth, in good working order,
use 'em for chewing unde
naturized food, and have the
milkman deliver your quart of
milk every day. I

Rogue River, July 31. The
library board met Wednesday
evening to elect new officers.
Mrs. Myrtle McGrcgory was
elected chairman and Mrs. Eliza
beth Fowler, secretary-treasurer.
The name of Mrs. Lulu Troller
was submitted to fill Mrs. San-
dry's place. Plans were to install
a shelf of books in memory of
Mrs. Sam Sandry, now deceased.
who was a member of the library
board for many vears. The idea
was suggested by Mrs. Mabel
Wilson of Roseburg who was a
very dear friend of Mrs. Sandry.
She has donated several books
for the shelf; also Mrs. Alva
Withcral, another friend at Rose
burg, has sent books. Anyone
who would like to give a book
can give them to Mrs. lone
Jones, librarian.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Smith of
Vancouver, Wash., made a busi
ness, trip to Rogue River last
week. They also visited friends
and relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dengler re
turned Thursday from a vacation
trip to Marshficld and Roseburg
where they visited a daughter,
Mrs. George Withick and a son,
Orville and families. '

a machine shop.
Mrs. Forest Burnett has receiv
ed word of the passing of her
oldest brother, James Whiteside,
in Missouri.
Arthur Whims Is building a
garage on his property on the
corner of School street and
Broadway.
Mrs. Mabel Wilson of Rose
burg is visiting at the home of
Sam Sandry and daughter, Doris.
Grange members held a picnic
at the home of Mr and Mrs. W.
L. Badley on Sunday. About 40
attended. All report a pleasant
day. Another picnic will be held
in August on the lawn at the
Frank Hall home.
Sam Sandry is spending a few
days at the Whipple - Sandry
mine on Wards creek.

nice Howard were saddened to J
learn of her son, Bob, being
killed in action in the South !
Pacific area. Bob lived here for
some time and was known as
Bob Dixon.
The sawmill is running 10
hours a day this week to catch
up on orders.

Army Air Field here recently
! received the vote of his barracks
for the "most thoughtful sol
dier" of the week. Sgt. Pierson
went on a furlough and was
married, but he did not forget
the boys. Several days after the
wedding, Barracks 658 received
a box of cigars.

Stars and Stripes refers to Monte
Cassino, we can say it was never
established that the monastery
was used for military purposes.
