Seabees Capture
Largest Jap Flag
San Francisco, July 29 (U.R)
J. P. Sheridan, chipf carpen
ter's mate, USN, of New York
city, today displayed at 12th na
val district headquarters what
was believed to be the largest
Japanese flag yet captured a
hand-stitehed banner measuring
a cy 13 tcet.
Sheridan was one of six sea
bees unloading supplies at Kwa
jalcin who were caught by
enemy gunfire as American
tanks attacked a Japanese pill
box. Diving into another enc-Tiy
pillbox, Sheridan and the Sea
bees captured two wounded nips
they found there. A Japanese
colonel apparently had hauled
down the garrison flag and kill
ed himself on top of it.

ADENOIDS AN
What has become of the "train-
" ,,. ,.i, - .hp
cd" nurse, the teacher, or the
doctor, forsooth, Who used to
and his atten
tion wool-gath-
e r i n g and
forthwith sen
tence the poor
kid to an oper
ation for ad-
Dr Bradv enoids? That
sort of malpractice was an every
day occurence when you and I
were young, Maggie.
This snap diagnosis was made
on the mere facial expression
the "adenoid fades" Classical
example of the "adenoid fades"
is, or was, Van Leyden's portrait
of Ferdinand I of Spain open
mouth, stupid expression, dull
hollow eyes, short upper lip, ex
posing upper teeth, narrow high
arched palate, crowded uneven
upper teeth, pinched or narrow
nostrils, mouth breathing and
generally more or less impair
ment of hearing. All these fea
tures may go with simple en
largement of the tonsils, whether
there is significant thickening,
hypertrophy or "vegetations" of
the pharyngeal tonsil (third ton
sil, adenoids) or not.
As a matter of fact a child
with sufficient obstruction of
breathing to give rise to such
features of the adenoid facies"
has the same I. Q. as a child
without such trouble, if you al
low for (1) the handicap of under
oxygenation which, of course,
impairs or weakens all vital
functions, physical and mental,
as well as growth and develop
ment; (2) the handicap of de
fective hearing, which, as I see
it, is one of the very few con
sequences of tonsil and adenoid
enlargement that may justify
surgery not that deafness in
such cases necessarily warrants
surgical removal of the tonsils
or adenoids, for in many cases
a few X-ray treatments In the
hands of a physician skilled in
that field will suffice.
If there is any special mental
deficiency, stupidity or dullness
associated with adenoids or en
larged tonsils, other than the
general vital handicaps men
tioned, it is the stupidity and in
competency of the doctors,
nurses, teachers, social service
agents and parents who conspire
to subject children wilh large
tonsils to operation.
Some readers may remember
that I was formerly more en
thusiastic about the removal of
enlarged tonsils and adenoids
than I am now. In my book "Per
sonal Health", now out of print,
I represented the operation as
comparatively free from risk and
productive of uniformly good re
sults. In the pamphlet "Adenoids
and Tonsils" copy available on
request if you provide stamped
envelope bearing your address
it is clear that I have grown con
servative. QITSTIONS
