matic fever," the chief danger is
that the Streptococcus or Pncu
mococcus that causes the inflam
mation of Joint or Joints and the
fever may lodge in the lining of
the heart and produce Inflam
mation of the lining membrane
(endocarditis) and, if the inflam
mation happens to Involve the
area of a heart valve, perhnps
distort the valve so it will not
close perfectly, and that means
valvular disease, vnlvUlnr leak
age, which is usually permanent,
although with intelligent care
the heart will In the course of
months or years enlarge (hyper
trophy) sufficiently to pump
more than the normal quantity
of blood at each beat and thus
compensate for the leakage and
maintain efficient circulation.

On his way to eat a picnic
lunch in the cool shade along

PX No. 1 to trade two empty
half-pint milk bottles for two
of the same full.
When the PX waitress re
turned with the two new half
pints, she ceremoniously opened
them, and then carefully poured
them into the two empty iden
tical bottles.
The now wide-eyed GI asked,
"What was that for?"
Said the waitress, "This Is
the Army and we are not al
lowed to allow milk bottles to
have the PX."
