or three other recent books on
the same subject, in this col
umn. I had examined them in
the hope of finding something
fresh, something new, since they
were the first textbooks of geri
atrics, which has not yet, though
it may become a field of prac
tice for specialists, provided we
can persuade the pediatrists to
release a few patients from
their supervision when patients
get along past thirty or forty
years of age.
The fight against cancer can
not bring any great victory as
long as there are many people
with the attitude of the writer
of tljat editorial. What less
dreaded term can or should an
honest doctor use when con
fronted with signs or symptoms
which may possibly spell can
cer? The head-in-the-sand posi
tion the editorial writer ap
proves may be all right from
his point of view. It would be
criminal for a doctor. It is the
sacred duty of the doctor in
such circumstances to tell the
patient or the patient's family
at the earliest possible moment
that (1) he fears the trouble is
cancer but he cannot be sure as
yet, or (2) that the patient
should have the benefit of the
opinion of another doctor, or
(3) it is cancer in his opinion
and the patient should have the
proper treatment immediately.
