VILLAGESOTDEAD
LEFT IN WAKE OF
E
By Richard D. McMillan
United Press Correspondent
With British Beyond Caen,
July 19. (U.R) More than a
score of "villages of dead" were
left behind tonight as the Brit
ish thrust further soutli across
one of the most evil and murder
ous appearing battlefields I ever
saw.
What once were tiny villages
nestled in the hollows were gut
ted ruins. Not one of them had
a single house untouched.
Counters Repulsed
German tanks had counter
attacked repeatedly since yes
terday noon, but the British re
pulsed them and punched on
again with guns thundering like
a thousand giant blacksmiths
beating their anvils.
This is mostly open country
Waving fields of yellowing
wheat on either side of the road
along which the battle was be
ing fought were spattered with
black smudges, bomb craters
left from yesterday's record
allied air attack.
Around these craters, small
groups of Germans were sprawl
ed in death, their ghastly faces
coated by dust kicked up by the
endless stream of tanks pressing
forward to battle.
Under foliage-stripped trees
at the edges of the fields were
more clusters of German dead.
They had been caught in the air
torrent when they sought shel
ter. Naiii Weary
The British already have cap
tured many villages in their
drive south.
One German prisoner among
a group I met trudging back
through one of these villages,
told me the Nazi troops were
weary of the battle.
"I will tell you frankly and
this is the view of all of us,
we'll be glad when it's finished,"
he said. "We went through the
terrors of hell. It doesn't matter
whether I am a Nazi or anything
else, it is more than human be
ings can stand. After this we
know war is really nearing
the end."

110 FOUND DEAD
NEAR WAREHOUSE
The county coroner's office
was today seeking to contact
any possible relatives of Walter i
Bernard Connely, 55 or 80 years !
old, who was found dead early !
this morning near the Southern
Pacific railroad tracks at Fourth
and Fir streets. While it' was
believed that death resulted
from a heart attack, an autopsy
was to be performed to deter
mine exact cause of death.
City police were informed of
Connely's death at 5:50 a. m.
by Francis Joseph McBride of
Medford, who reported that he
and Connely drank a quart of
wine last night and went to
sleep back of the Medford Feed
and Seed company, 18 West
Fourth street. McBride told po-
lice that when he awakened
this morning he was unable to
arouse Connely.
Police, who went to the
scene, said there was no indica
tion of violence or foul play.
The body was removed to the
coroner's morgue.
According to a selective serv
ice registration card found in
Connely's pocket, his address
was listed as Route 3, Ellens
burg, Wash.

Heavy selling continued on the
New York stock exchange today
for the second consecutive ses
sion and about $500,000,000 was
pared from the value of all list
ed stocks.
Trading was active and vol
ume topped a million shares for
the 29th consecutive full session.
Selling was prompted by cau
tion growing out of the confu
sion created by the fall of the
Japanese cabinet and yester
day's attempted assassination of
Adolf Hitler. Another unsettling
factor was the announcement
that U. S. troops had landed on
Guam In another step toward
Japan.
