ed in the service over a year
ago and expects overseas duty
immediately. His wife accom
panied him on the trip. Miss
Miller underwent a major oper
ation last Friday at Sacred
Heart Hospital. Her parents,
Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Brown of
Anniston, Ala., arrived In Med
ford last week to be with Miss
Miller who is now able to re

WELFARE REPORT
OUTLAY IN JUNE
Total obligations incurred by
the Jackson County Public Wel
fare Commission in their general
assistance during June, 1944
were 55.498.53, only slightly
higher, than the $5,457.38 in
curred in,May of this year, ac
cording to the monthly statis
tical report issued today. During
the past month, 167 cases, in
volving 356 persons were given
aid by the commission. Of these,
156 cases or 319 persons were
resident cases, while non-resident
cases numbered 11, includ
ing 37 persons.
An analysis of last month's
total shows that cash grants al
lowed totaled S3, 036; requisition
relief, $1,411.56; burials, $65;
hospitalization, $434.80; and
other medical care, $551.17.
Cases receiving hospitaliza
tion, medical care or burial num
bered 53 Seven cases made up
the $434.80 hospital obligations,
while 48 persons were given
medical care totaling $551.17 and
one burial was handled.
Old age assistance was given
In 37 cases, costing $511.44, three
of which required hospitaliza
tion, 34 medical care and one
burial. Aid to dependent chil
dren was given in four cases,
costing $15.48. Supplementary
medical care, given in 18 cases,
involved expenditures of $398.

Mat Alhert Frank, retired
and Mrs. Frank have purchased
the residence at 611 South Ivy
street from Bert Cook and will
make their home In Medford,
occupying the dwelling on Sept.
1. They are now staying at the
Col. W. H. Paine home, 56 North
Orange street.
Maj. Frank was stationed at
Camp White with the Service
Unit 1913 from May
of 1942 until his retirement on
Oct. 4, 1943. The Franks then
left for their former home In
Detroit, Mich., but having be
come so fond of Medford and
the Rogue River valley they re
turned 10 days ago to urne up
Dermanent residence. They have
no children.
$3 Million Needed
In Demo Campaign
Treasurer Asserts
Chicago Stadium, July 20
(U.R) Democratic National
Treasurer Edwin K. Pauley told
the first convention session
Wednesday that a $3,000,000
campaign fund was needed to
"carry the bare message to the
American people."
He recalled that In 1942, when
he took over his present job, the
party had a $750,000 deficit,
largely arising from the 1940
campaign.
"Now there Is no deficit," he
added. The delegates cheered
but a moment later he said the
present surplus would be ex
hausted by the time the conven
tion is over.
The $3,000,000 quota was set
by National Chairman Robert E.
Hannegan, he said, adding that
the party was depending on
rank and file democrats to pro
duce the necessary amount.

War Plants Corporation
To Tell Aid Available
A meeting will be held at the
Jackson County Chamber' of
Commerce at 7:30 p. m. Tues
day, July 25, by the Smaller War
Plants Corporation. This corpor
ation is a government agency
organized to give assistance in
the field to smaller businesses,
which are those firms employ
ing less than 500 persons. It will
be outlined how these firms can
secure assistance in procuring
contracts, materials and repairs
for their institution and financial
loans. Assistance will also be
given In production of necessary
civilian goods, in obtaining sur
plus government equipment and
machine tools, and the many
items that are now classified as
surplus goods by the war and
navy departments.
The meeting should be of par
ticular interest to sawmill oper
ators and loggers, operators of
machine shops, foundaries, metal
fabrications, garages and other
firms who may be interested in
supplying, servicing, recondition
ing or procuring motorized
equipment.
The government is now In
terested in placing orders for
servicing and reconditioning
motorized equipment and it will
be explained how this type of
work may be secured by local
jobbers, including garages. Sur
plus equipment should be of in
terest to any firm of a service
nature including laundries, bak
eries, machine shops and others.
The Chamber of Commerce
believes that the meeting will be
very helpful to the firms of this
county and it Is expected that
there will be a large attendance.
IS CITED IN ITALY
. With Fifth Army, Italy. July
20. (UP.) The 100th Hawaiian
American battalion, composed
partly of Americans of Japanese
descent, has been awarded a war
department citation for "out
standing performance of duty in
action," Lt. Gen. Mark W. Clark
announced today.
The 100th battalion has fought
with the fifth army through
Italy from Salerno to Livorno
and played an important part in
the capture of Livorno yester
day. The citation was for action in
the vicinity of Belvedere and
Sasseta June 26 and 27.
At Belvedere the battalion
fought against superior forces
and destroyed the right flank of
the enemy, killing at least 178
Germans, the citation said.
The battalion is commanded
by Lt. Col. Gordon Singles of
Denver, Colo.

according to word received by

Young Fichtner, who left here

famous 41st Infantry Division,
wrote that he was hit on the
right elbow by shrapnel, which
caused a small wouud.
