Back in the days when only
the elite among working men
drew down as much as $1.50 a
day my fee
was $10 plus
$1 a visit for
as many calls
as seemed ne
cessary. Since there
was no legal
stan dard or
r e q u ircment
and even any
health depart
ment concern
about the
Or Bradv practice of
nursing, any woman who had a
mind to could hold herself out
as a practical nurse, move in
bag and baggage, and I employ
these terms advisedly, when the
mistress of the household was
confined, doing the cooking,
washing and housework, and
doubling as nurse for mother
and infant, at anywhere from
$7 to $12 a week, including
board and lodging.
That's how I grew gray so
young worrying about the
frightful infractions of aseptic
technique committed by these
practical nurses. So few of
them, in those days, tried to
learn the first rule of surgical,
medical or obstetric cleanliness
and so few of them could possi
bly understand its vital import
ance the simple rule: Don't
touch.
I was so young, I suppose it
was almost rude of me, but I
recall as though it had hap
pened this morning one spirited
debate I had across the bed with
a practical nurse who had just
informed the head of the house
that she must be away for sev
eral hours she had to visit the
home of a recent patient of hers
to get the breast pump, which
she must begin using first thing
in the morning, and I said no,
no, and the patient conceded
not too readily that, after all,
I was the doctor, and so the
practical nurse was off that

two points per pound were the
steaks; porterhouse, T-bone,

round tip roasts, and one point
to beef rump roasts, and some
standing rib roasts. Lamb yoke
roasts also joined the point
parade.
It looks as though Mrs. Ameri
ca will have to bear down on
her used kitchen fat conserva
tion. With only 30 points as the
monthly allowance for each
member of the family, the two
extra points that are allowed by
OPA for each pound of used fat
turned over to a meat dealer
will go a long way to balance
tbe family point budget.

K. C. Adams, a spokesman for
Lewis, wrote that the republican
