In recent years specific anti
gens for Ivy and Oak poisoning

acted, That the grants aforesaid
are made upon the condition that
the said companies shall keep
said raldroad and telegraph in
repair and use, and shall at all
times transport the mails upon
said railroad, and transmit des
patches by said telegraph line
for the government of the United
States, when required so to do
by and department thereof, and
that the government shall at all
times have the preference In the
use of said railroad and tcle-
mow u, earn railroad ana teie-i
graph therefor at fair and reason-
able rates of compensation, not
to exceed the rates paid by pri
vate parties for the same kind of
service. And said railroad shall
be and remain a public highway
for the use of the government of
the United States, free of all toll
or other charges upon the trans
portation of the property or
troops of the United States; and
the same shall be transported
over said road at the cost charge,
and expense of the corporations
or companies owning or oper
ating the same, when so required
by the government of the United
States.
SEC. 8. And be It further en
acted That the said companies
shall file their assent to this act
In the Department of the Interior
within one year after the passare
hereof, and shnll complete the
first section of twenty miles of
said railroad and telegraph with
in two years, and at least twenty
miles In each year thereafter,
and the whole on or before the
first day of July, one thousand
eight hundred and seventy-five:
and the said railroad sh!i be of
the same gauge as the ' central
Pacific Railroad" of California,
and be connected thcrewth.
SEC. 7. And be It further en
acted. That the said companies
named In this act are hereby re
quired to operate and use the
portions or parts of said railroad
and telegraph mentioned In sec-
tion one of this act for all pur-
poses of transportation, travel,
and communication, so far as the
government and public are con
cerned, as one connecter' and
continuous line; and In such
operation and use to afford and
secure to each other equal ad
vantages and facilities as to
rates, time, and transportation,,
without any discrimination what
ever, on pain of forfeiting the
full amount of damage sustained
on account of such discrimina
tion, to be sued for and recover
ed In any court of the United
States, of competent Jurisdiction.
SEC. 8. And be it further en
acted, That In case the said com
panies shall fall to comply with
the terms and conditions requir
ed, namely, by not filing their
assent thereto aa provided In sec-

about the time of that single at
tack of Ivy poisoning. I wonder,
too, whether I regained enough
immunity to protect me since

ing a wee bit of ivy leat eariy
in the spring or by taking the

Millan, United Press war corre
spondent, who has covered ma
jor campaigns since the start of
the war without a scratch, was
wounded in the back by a shell
fragment today when a German
naval battery laid down a bar
rage on American positions, kill
ing a sergeant and wounding sev
eral officers.
McMillan still was on his feet
tonight, treating the whole thing
as a Joke, after going Into Cher
bourg and writing a dispatch on
conditions Insido the city.

Washington, June 27 U.R)
The war department today Is
sued a call for skilled electrical
workers to volunteer for at
least 90 days' service on two vi
tal war construction jobs the
Hanford Engineer Works at Pas
co, Wash., and the Clinton En
gineer Works at Knoxville, Tenn.
The call was made by Under
secretary of War Robert P. Pat
terson. Under the plan, electrical
workers now employed by con
struction contractors, utility
companies and electric shops of
all types will be asked to take a
leave of absence for work on the
projects. After 90 days of satis
factory work, volunteers will be
issued 3 special certificate to
acknowledge their service and
their regular employers will re
ceive letters of recognition.
Volunteers at the Hanford En
gineer Works will receive the
regular rate of $1.68 per hour,
with earnings of $100.65 for the
standard 54-hour week. At the
Clinton Engineer Works the rate
is $1.50 per hour, with earnings
of $105 per week for the stand
ard 60-hour week.
Housing and dining facilities
are available at both projects at
reasonable rates. Transportation
for volunteers will be handled
by locals of the electrical unions.
FIRE FIGHTER PLANE
PRACTICES NEAR G.P.
Grants Pass, June 27 The
Siskiyou forest fire fighter plane
arrived in Grants Pass Thursday
for a three-day practice for fire
fighter parachuters, H. C. Obye,
forest supervisor, said.
Larry Moore of The Dalles is
under contract to the forest serv
ice to have a plane here for fire
fighting from July 1 to Septem
ber 10, the most dangerous time
for fires Obye said
The plane will be stationed at
the airport, four miles south of
Cave Junction, The practice
jumping has been done in the
vicinity of Camp Chicago and at
Cave Junction. Cargo dropping
of supplies and equipment was
also practiced.

Jack McCoy, who has been
working in a mill at Prospect,
was struck on the head by a
falling block recently and had
to have ten stitches taken in the
cut which resulted.
Ellsworth Rohison, who is
with the Forest Service, is be
ing sent to the Devil's Peak look
out near Klamath Falls, where
he will stay alone until the mid
dle of September. His supplies
will be taken In every fifteen
days by pack mule. Ellsworth
took his dog, Mush, with him for
company.
. H. P. Jewett Is confined to
bed by a lame leg The doctor
says he must stay for at least two
weeks if he expects it to get well
soon.
Mary Pence has gone to Port
land, where she Is to undergo
an operation on her leg.
