today when he faced Dale
Lewis, Utah State College, In
the quarter finals of the Nation
al Collegiate meet at north
western University.
The bandy-leg ged, dark
skinned "Panch'o" (Spanish for
just plain Frank) said he was
"muy cansado" from his weeks
of hard campaigning, and a
look at Segura plus a peek into
a handy pocked-sized English
Spanish vocabulary, Vol. II,
would Indicate that he meant
he was very tired.
"Pancho" looked anything
but tired, however, as he
stepped onto the court yester
day just after getting off a train
from Cincinnati, where he had

by rolling up 28 points on his
accurate placements to defeat

defeated Bob Crawford of Ann
apolis, 7-5, 7-5. Lewis was the
starting guard for Utah's na
tional championship basketball

Tommy Bell rang up his 38th
consecutive victory last night on
a split 10-round decision over
Pvt. Frltzle Zlvic of the army air
corps, the ancient gladiator, who
once wore the world welter
weight crown.
Before this bout at Forbes
Field, 31-year-old zlivic was pub
licized as the man for whom the
bell would toll, because young
Tommy had knocked out 28 pre
vious opponents. Bell, weighing
149, was the 2-1 favorite.
But the crowd of 10,018 cash
customers was pleasantly sur
prised at the stiff opposition pro
vided by Zlvic, who registered
an unprecedented 158 pounds on
the scales, and who was rusty
after an absence of three months
from the ring. Two of those
months were spent In the army,
from which he is on a brief
furlough.
Bell, although 10 years young
er than Zivic, had to come from
behind in the closing sessions
to win.

The state game commission,
meeting In Portland over the
week-end, made only one change
in dates of hunting seasons ten
tatively set two weeks earlier,
Kenneth G. Denman, a member
of the commission, said upon his
return to Medford.
The open season on elk will
be from Nov. 1 to Nov. 30 instead
of from Nov. 4 to Nov. 30, as
originally scheduled, Denman
stated. AH other open season
dates were confirmed by the
commission.
The open season on pheasants
will be from Oct. 14 to Nov. 5 In
Jackson, Josephine and Douglas
counties, and on California or
valley quail during the same
time. The deer season will run
from Oct. 1 through Oct. 31.

was presented at Forbes field last night during the Zivic-Bell box
ing show. Between preliminaries, highest bidders in bonds were
able to secure the services of well known Pittsburg sports writer
for a day or nignt of menial or screwball services. . -
Although -the

writers volunteered to be "sold'
for such services as mowing
lawns, washing dishes, or chauf
feuring, such were not their des

famous tobacco auctioneer, L. A.
"Speed" Riggs, completed his
famous radio mumbo-jumbo over
them.
Once Riggs got the abashed
scribes into the ring, he promised
the fans A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G If they
would bid high enough. These
lads were adept, he proclaimed,
in washing babies' didles, clean
ing stables, digging ditches, col
lecting butterflies, washing 10th
floor windows, etc.
Accordingly bond bids reached
$10,000 or more for three of the
somewhat-horrified gentlemen of
the press Chet Smith, sports
editor of the Pittsburgh Press; Al
Abrams, boxing writer of the
Pittsburgh Post -Gazette; and

An American scientist who in
vented one of the first rocket
bombs 25 years ago said today
that the new German winged
bomb now vaunted as the Nazi
secret weapon is "neither new
nor secret" and indicated' that
this country has developed the
same type of bomb and a defense
against it as well.

of the National Inventors' Coun

Office of War Information to
have filed application on Aug.
25, 1919, for a patent of "an
aerial torpedo, that is a self-propelled
