LEAD BOMBARDIER
IN HAUL FORAY

South Pacific Flying his first
mission as lead bombardier of
an entire squadron of 13th AAF
bombers, First Lieutenant Jack
P. Martin of Gold Hill, Oregon
was assigned one of the hardest
targets to hit In the South Paci
fic's Rabaul area. But thanks to
Bombardier Martin the Japs
probably spent their next meal
picking bomb shrapnel from
their rapidly dwindling rice
supply.
The target was a supply dump
In the middle of a dense Jungle,
The Japs are artists at camou
flage and this area minus the
clear boundaries drawn on the
map was no picnic.
Bombardier Martin paid no
attention to the anti-aircraft
bursts, one of which nicked a
nearby plane. He followed the
same procedure he had used on
19 previous missions, just as he
was taught before he graduated
from Albuquerque bombardier
lng school, New Mexico, April
17, 1943.
A large explosion followed by
a column of dark brown smoke
blossomed from the center of the
target.
Official reports after photo
graphs of the bombing had been
Interpreted: "A pattern of bombs
blanketed approximately 80 of
the target. Several small build
ings were also hit."

Gold Hill received the thrill of
a lifetime while viewing the in
vasion pictures at Medford thea
ters last week for one of the
close-ups was of Pvt. Donald
Case, in an army anti-aircraft
unit.
First to see the picture was
the private's sister, Mrs. John
Nelson of Medford. In great ex
citement, Mrs. Nelson informed
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John
Nelson of Gold Hill, and the
couple came to Medford Friday
to see the picture.
As a favor to the parents, the
operator at the Craterlan thea
ter removed one frame from the
film, which In no way damages
the film for further showings,
and this is being enlarged by a
Medford photographer in order
that a permanent print may be
made for the Cases.
FOUR BURN TO DEATH
IN RESIDENCE FIRE
San Anselmo, Calif., June 27
(U.PJ Mr. and Mrs. Carroll
Johnson and their two sons,
Everett, 8, and Wesley, 14,
months, were burned to death
when their two-story home was
destroyed by fire of undeter
mined origin.
Al Fourmet, a neighbor, said
he was awakened by screams
from the Johnson home about
2:30 a. m. He opened the door
to their house and the flames
rushed out. The Johnsons came
to San Anselmo from Arkansas
about two years ago.

ORDERED ABOLISHED

civilian defense will cease to
exist as such, under provisions
of administrative order No. 38,

Jose Rodrigucs will act as
master of ceremonies for the
kiddies' bond premiere sched
uled for Friday morning of this
week to promote the sale of
bonds In the current Fifth War
Loan drive. Rodrigues, with
three of his co-workers from the
farm labor supply center at
Camp Prcscott, will also present
a program of Mexican music for
the premiere.
Rodrigues will appear In gui
tar and vocal solos, and with Fe
lix Ortiz and Lois Alfaro will
present song trios. Also appear
ing will be Miguel Espindola and
Ignacio Mondragon. It Is planned
that the musical program will
last about 45 mlnues.
' In addition to the Mexican pro
gram, on the screen there will
be Walt Disney's famous feature
cartoon, "Snow White and the
Seven Dwarfs," In technicolor.
Tickets for the premiere may
be had upon presentation of any
bond purchased during the drive,
which started June 12, and
which has not previously been
used for the show at the Crate
rlan last week. The bonds may
be presented at the Cratcrian
theater or at the drive headquar
ters, 21 North Central avenue,
where tickets will be available.

Following a meeting of the
executive board, officials of the
Northwestern Council of Lum
ber and Sawmill Workers (AFL),
announced today that no imme
diate action was contemplated
in regard to the National War
Labor Board's rejection of wage
Increases for more than 100,000
northwest lumber workers.
Kenneth Davis, northwestern
council secretary, said he had
telegraphed Washington, D. C.
for clarification, of various
points contained in a 30-page
statement issued by the WLB,
which confirmed denial of hour
ly wage boosts from 90 cents
to $1.05 for the AFL. and to
$1.02V4 for the CIO.

from Congressman Harris Ells
worth, the Gas Ice corporation's
application for a dry ice plant
to be located at the site of the
Llthla Springs has been given fi
nal approval in Washington. This
means that the apnlication has
cleared all necessary boards.

tion, stated that the best possible
delivery on the huge compressor
necessary to operate the plant is
15 weeks. Parts for the snow
press must be made in machine
shops of the Pacific coast and
Newbern Is trying to get this
done in the machine shops here.

Details of another allied secret
weapon, a portable bridge, were
revealed today after Gen. Sir
Bernard L. Montgomery credit
ed it with much of the success
of the Tunisian, Sicilian and
Italian campaigns.
The Bailey bridge, named
after its inventor Donald Cole
man Bailey, a ministry of sup
ply worker who designed it on
the back of an envelope, fits
together like a jig saw puzzle.
But it is so simple any group of
soldiers, with the aid of a hand
book, can fit it together.
Each section of the bridge is
10 feet long, made of 17 parts,
the heaviest of which can be
handled by six men. As the
parts are fitted together they
are pushed on rollers until the
gap is bridged.
The bridge can cross any gap
up to 240 feet without the aid
of pontoons. With pontoons the
stretch is almost limitless.
A Bailey bridge which Brit
ish engineers threw across a 300
foot gap of the Trigno river in
Italy in 36 hours was called one
of the most remarkable achieve
ments in the history of military
operations. i
The bridge, now being used
in Normandy, was developed
after other types of bridges
failed to support the Increased
weight of new tanks.

ation of France will begin pour

Cherbourg 48 hours after Ger

GRANTS PASS BOY
Grants Pass, June 27 Guy
Guy Junior Jackson, 10-year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. G. T.
Jackson, S12 East M street, was
drowned in the Rogue river
about 8 o'clock . Sunday night
when he waded out over his
depth a short distance down
river from the railroad bridge,
Chief of Police Carl Dallas told
the Courier today.
The body was found at 9:16,
wedged against a pier of the
bridge 35 or 40 feet up river
from where the boy went under.

fire department were used un
til 11:30 p. m., when Dr. S. B,
Osgood, county health doctor,
pronounced him dead.
The boy's parents had gone to
the show about 7:30 Sunday
night, when Guy, his sister
Thelma, a smaller brother and
sister, and a neighbor, Raymond
Rigel, decided to go wading,
When the boy went under, the
others ran to a telephone to
summon help. The parents were
notified at once.

FORM CHURCH CHOIR

Seventeen men formed the
choir for the Father's Day serv
ice last Sunday morning at the
Presbyterian church. The ob
servance was postponed one
week from the established date
due to Children's Day on June
18. Except for Mrs. Ray J.
Harris, pianist, the women
usually helping with the music
took seats in the congregation.

COMPANY'S FAULT
Houston, Texas, June 27 (U.R)
A walkout which has virtually
halted war production at the
Hughes Tool company s vast
Houston plant was characterized
today by labor leaders as the
product of a "showdnwn fight
between the United States gov
ernment and the Hughes com
pany."
Martin Burns, an International
representative of the United
Steelworkers of America (CIO),
told 4000 cheering workers at
a mass meeting last night that
the company had provoked the
walkout by refusing to obey di
rectives of the War Labor Board
over a 14-month period.
The work stoppage which be
gan last Saturday, gairfed mo
mentum. It was estimated that
3800 workemn roughly 70 to
75 per cent of the Hughes work
ing force were off the Job.

was mnounced that average at

About 100 attended the program.
