With all the principles we tell
the world we have in regard to
education, it is startling to learn
that a large
number of
young men are
unfit for mili
tary service by
r e a s o n of il
literacy. How
do they get
that way?
Neglect b f
education is re
sponsible for a
c o n s i derable
part of the

clency In youths and young men
who are unfit to fight. By this
I mean to say that if these boys
had received a fair deal in grade
school and high school and col
lege, they would be better men,
better qualified to be of real
service to the country, instead of
being a burden and handicap in
time of peril.
For there's no getting around
ine snametul fact that a con
siderable part of the time, effort
and huge cost of preparing
youths for- active service in ex
ponded in the satempt to give
them a kind of hasty cram course
in the department of physical
education-to make up for the con
sistent neglect of that part of
the youth's schooling. In view
of the wretched material the
military authorities have to work
with they do a fine job of It in
training camp.
The education of women that
I oppose is the kind most girls
get in common school, high
school and college, the kind that
purports to improve the mind
regardless of the state of the
body.
For many years Dr. Clelia
Duel Mosher was medical ad
viser to women in Leland Stan
ford University. She pretty well
proved the periodic "illness"
which disables so many poor
educated young women for a day
or two in each month Is remedied
or corrected in most Instances,
so far as "illness" or disability
is concerned, by reasonable
physical education. Dr. Mosher
