a handicapped individual is,
just be as natural with them
as possible, the patient rea

should be offered. To familiar
ize these well meaning families
and friends is the object of
my writing ...
Greet the .boy who returns
from the war maimed or disfigur
ed with a welcome home and put
your heart in it, but not one
word about the wound or the
loss he has suffered, unless he
himself insists on talking about
it. Better, as soon as you nave
told him how glad you are to
see him, begin at once to tell
him what goes, bring him up to
date, on the news about old
friends, etc. The sympathy that
does the most good Is not verbal.

Observations
Seen and heard In a hotel
lobby: A sailor and a girl were
facing each other, yet I noticed
that instead of looking Into her
eyes, the sailor looked Instead
first at her left ear ring and
then her right one. I snw her
ear rings were tiny mlrors. May
be this was her way of finding
out whether her boy friends
would rather walch her or them
selves. A big. swaggering man, nat
tily tailored and groomed lo
within an Inch of his life, kept
telling of the pany he was going
lo that night. The drinks they'd
have at that parly! And the
blondes! Plus brunettes and red
heads. He kept dn.hing into the
phone booth, alternately bellow
ing and pleading for long dis
tance to get him Walla Walla.
Then he'd come out and sit a
while and tell some more about

unbroken tradition of 132 years,
handed down from father to
son, that stretches bock to the
War of 1812, Army ordnance
officials here explain.
The living repositories of this
experience and the most devot
ed guardians of this tradition
are the veteran civilian em
ployees of the ordnance depart
ment. Army ordnance officials have
announced that five employees
have been on the job in ord
nance arsenals and armories for
periods ranging from .50 to 54
years each.
James H. Gill began his long
service at Frankfort Arsenal,
Philadelphia, on March 5, 1891;
Herman E. Alex and Joseph
Lahey signed at the Rock Island
111., Arsenal in 1892; and Theo
dore F. Fletcher and John P.
Nell Joined the staff of the
Springfield, Mass., Army in
1893.
The Gill family is an institu
tion at the Frankfort Arsenal,
the bang-up time he'd have at
the party. This back and forth
business went on for some time.
There were periods when I
thought his language must sure
ly melt the mouthpiece' of the
phone. But when he finally did
get Walla Walla, I wondered it
didn't melt with tenderness, so
lovingly did he speak into it.
When he returned from this
successful trip into the booth,
his face was positively fatuous.
After he left, a man explained,
"That call was to his wife.
Phones her every day; always
scared something'U happen to
her; crazy about her."
If I live to be a hundred years
old, I'll never understand men.

records show. In addition to his
splendid record of 54 years of
service, James H. Gill's father,
Ross M. Gill, was employed at
(he Arsenal from 1869 until
1890, and his grandfather, Jabez
Gill, from 1864 to 1905. In ad-
dition, his son, James K. Gill,
was employed at the arsenal
from 1917 to 1919. This adds
up to 117 years of service for
the family.
Incidentally, Jabez Gill is
credited with the invention of
the Gill Dial Loader, which is
still in use in all small-plants
today without substantial mod
ification. This invention for
loading cartridge cases made
the use of the complete round
posible. The Frankford Arsen
al recently presented one' of the
original Gill Dial Loader ma
chines, which had been in use
since 1869, to the Franklin In
stitute of Philadelphia.
In paying tribute to the vet
eran employees of the ordnance
department, the officials said
the highly complicated instru
ments of modern warfare could
not possibly have been designed
and manufactured so quickly
after Pearl Harbor without the
invaluable aid and counsel of
the ordnance old-timers.
She gave a little gasp and ex
claimed, "Oh, oh! So Jack got
his furlough after all. . You boys
beat it." The young woman
