Combat Infantryman Badge, ac

ville. Pit. Bratten is a' rifleman

which fought at Guadalcanal
and on Bougainville. The divi
sion, formed in New Caledonia,
is the only division in the United
States army having a name in

It Captain Theodore A.
Nave has advanced from first
lieutenant to captain with the
IX Troop Carrier command in
England, according to a news
dispatch from England. Prior to
his enlistment in October of
1940, Capt. Nave was employed
by the First National Bank of
Portland, Medford branch. The
release states that the IX Troop
Carrier command, which hauls
paratroopers and tows gliders, is
the newest of the troop carrier
organizations.
If Nurses Aide Anne Van
Valzah, Medford, was one of 37
University of Oregon women re
ceiving her nurses aide cap and
certificate, signifying the com
pletion of 80 hours of work as a
volunteer nurses aide in a
Eugene ' hospital, at capping
ceremonies held on the campus
recently. Miss Van Valzah, who
has just completed her sopho
more year at the university, is
majoring In art. She Is the
daughter of R. C. Van Velzah
of 19 Elm St.

James E. Abbott of Medford has
been assigned to the AAF Train
ing command radio school at
Sioux Falls, S. D., according to
a dispatch from the field there.
He will receive a 20-week course
of training upon completion of
which he will take his place as
a member of a highly skilled
bomber crew of the AAF. Be
fore going into the army, Pvt
Abbott was a car salesman for
the Rogue River Chevrolet com
pany here. He Is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Everett Abbott of
Medford.
Assigned Second Lt. Ray
mond L. Proctor, recently pro
moted from warrant officer by
a direct commission In the field,
has been assigned to take
charge of a camera maintenance
section in a 13th AAF medium
bomber group now pounding
Rabaul, main Japanese base in
the South Pacific, according to a
news release fiuui the 13 Lh
headquarters. Lt. Proctor en
listed in the infantry in October
of 1938 and transferred to the
air corps in 1939. His appoint
ment to warrant officer was in
December 1942, and was fol'ow
ed by his commission as a sec
ond lieutenant after he began
overseas service last January.
Lt. Proctor Is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. C. C. Proctor, 134 Portland
avenue.

the headquarters of Crater Lake
National Park, the road having
been reported open this morning

of the park here It was said that
persons desiring to hike from
park headquarters to the lake rim
could do so but warned that the
snow was still quite deep and
spt to be soft. Hikers should
wear boots or high schoes.

A special senate committee to
day proposed a 16-point legisla
tive program endorsed in gen
eral by War Mobillzer James F.
Byrnes as "a step forward in the
right direction" for converting
the nation's economy from war
to peace.
The committee warned, how
ever,, that industry would be
able to meet the challenge of
finding jobs for as many as
10,000,000 new workers after
the war only if there is a mini
mum of "government interfer
ence." Byrnes in .testimony before
the committee looked ahead to
"X-Day the collapse of Ger
many," and stressed the urgency
of speed in enacting legislation
to assure prompt termination of
war contracts.
"If the settlement of thou
sands of contracts were to be
held up until there Is a detailed
audit," he said, "then we may as
well Immediately provide for a
huge public works program."
In its long awaited report on
postwar problems, the commit
tee, headed by Senator Walter
F. George, D., Ga., warned that
the "very destiny of the nation
may depend upon wise and
prompt decisions" now.

TAKEN BT DEATH
George K. Rankin passed
away at his home, 114 Genessee,
Sunday afternoon at the age of
68. He had been failing in health
for about a year.
He was born June 11, 1876 In
Hillsdale, Penna. In 1884, with
his parents, John R. and Emma
Rankin, he moved to Hood Rjver
and for several years he and
his father operated the ferry be
tween Hood River and White
Salmon. In the spring of 1930
he came to Medford and was
united In marriage to Hattie
Rankin, owh survives. He fol
lowed the carpenter trade for
many years. He also leaves two
children by a former marriage:
Mrs. Gladis Linkis, Portland,
and Clarence Rankin, Prospect.
