three times its normal ammu
nition supply since landing at
Anzio. This was accomplished

emy strafing and bombing at

has spearheaded three Mediter
ranean invasions, landing on
D-day at Africa, Salerno and
Anzio. In each case he assisted
in setting up forward ammuni
tion depots for assault troops.
Pfc. Straw left Medford In
1941 after having been em
ployed by the Rogue River For
est Service as a fire guard for
two years. Prior to that he had
been a member of a CCC crew,
and a crew leader, In the Ap
plegate. He made his home with
Mr. and Mrs. Ted St.iwig, who
resided at 727 Alder street be
fore moving to Vallejo, Calif.
His mother resides in New
Bloomfield, Mo.
Pony express riders covered
about 250 miles a day as com
pared to the 120 miles covered
by a stagecoach in an average
day.

Normandy, June 7 (U.R) I
toured the Allied front in Nor
mandy all day today and en
tered this historic town of Bay
eux with the first Allied troops
who occupied it at midday.
It was a scene of rejoicing as
the populace went wild and
dashed through the narrow
streets throwing flowers and cry
ing, "God save the king. We've
waited for this day. On to Paris!"
Cheer In Street
The streets were blocked with
cheering men, women -and chil
dren. The Tri-Color and Union
Jacks hung from the windows.
Cafes threw open their doors
and pianists began to play Brit
ish and French patriotic tunes
as the crowds danced, shouting
I "Vive Tommy. Vive Amerique.
It was a scene of mingled war
iand peace through which I
passed as I drove a jeep into the
interior along part of the front
line and then back again to the
Allied coastal area. After a dusty,
dreary morning the sun burst
through and the skies cleared.
Havoc was wrought by allied
naval and air bombardment.
, which had wrecked some roads
and many hamlets which the
Germans had used as head
quarters. Some villages were entirely
deserted; in others some civil
ians remained and rushed out
with cluching hands, screaming
for joy. One village woman,
Madame Andre Nicholas told
me:

ed. They took everything we
had. Recently Rommel came to
this village on a visit of German
coast defenses. The Nazis turned
out in force. Rommel told them
'these positions are impregna
ble." We knew he was lying be
cause most German troops told

i for us. But we'll fight on never
theless until the last man."
Along the country lanes sub
dued looking German prisoners
streamed toward prison cages
: near the beaches. Allied artillery
was posted amidst Flanders pop
pies in the field pounded by the
enemy beyond Bayeux.
British and German dead lay
in the sunlight on the road
shoulders. In the fields peasants
i tended their sheep and cattle as
if this day were no different
j than any other. Allied war ma-
j chines rolled past along the dusty
highways, but the only sign the
; stolid peasants gave was a wave
of the hand.
