Specially trained, picked assault
teams of the U. S. army made
the initial attack on Fortress
Europe knocking out pillboxes
and other fortifications of the
vaunted Atlantic wall, the war
department said today.
Putting to use tactics perfect
ed in North Africa, Sicily and
Italy, the assault units hit the
beach under cover of heavy na
val artillery fire
These units, actually infantry
men, were given special training
to spearhead the massive as
sault. These men were equipped
with special engineer weapons.
The war department in re
porting that these men were the
first to land in western Europe
and rap on the doors of the west
wall, told how such an assault
operation is carried out.
Artillery First
The preparation was provided
by artillery by naval guns, by
air bombardment and by water
proof tanks firing hull-down in
the water.
The purpose of this is not
only to knock out pillboxes but
to tear up the enemy's field of
fire b yproviding shell craters
as cover for attacking units.
Each assault section Is com
posed of 30 men one officer
and 29 GI Joes. This Is the ca
pacity of the assault boats and
it is also the most convenient
size unit for attacking a single
pillbox. As the landing craft
comes into the beach, under cov
er of heavy naval and artillery

through land mines.
Torpedo Wires
It Is the job of the first man
ashoreyto locate the mines, and
mark safe lanes with special trac
ing strips. As part of this oper
ation, the barbed wire itself
must be cut, and American sol
diers have an efficient weapon
for this purpose.
It is the bangalore torpedo,
which comes in long sections
capable of being made into any
length necessary, depending up
on the depth of the barbed wire.
One member of the assault
team, under cover of small arms,
fixes the bangalore, sets the fuse
and ducks for cover. The torpedo
explodes with a terrific blast,
blowing a wide swath through
the wire The other members of
the team follow through the
wire and move up the beach.
An assault section is composed
of seven separate teams of vary
ing sizes, beginning with-riflemen
who build up a line of fire
to protect the others.
The rifle team is equipped
with Garand rifles, grenade
launchers, anti-personnel gren
ades, bangalores, wire cutters
and other normal infantry equip
ment. Five In Team
There are five men In this
team and, upon the initial land
ing, they move forward into po
sition and attempt to silence fire
from the pillbox by employment
of rifle fire and grenades.
They are followed by wire cut
ters who clear out wire not blow
by the bangalores. They also pro
vide fire support to the initial
group.
Next In line of approach is
the Browning automatic rifle
team, whose mission is to de
liver fire on portholes of the em
placement and keep the heads of
the enemy down. There are four
mn in this team.
Then there is the next team
the rocket gunners, firing the
famous bazooka rockets. Their
mission is to attack the pillbox
aperture to silence enemy fire.
"The accuracy of American
rocket gunners is remarkable,"
the war department observed.
"They rarely miss the target."
Flame Is Climax
The climax of the entire oper
ation is played by the soldier
with the flame-thrower and the
man with the demolition charge.
These are engineer weapons, but
the infantrymen have become
proficient in their use. After en
emy fire has been neutralized,
the flame-thrower goes through
the wire and takes a position as
near as possible to the pillbox.
He opens up with a jet of flame
which creates terrific heat with
in the concrete and keeps the
enemy out of action for the final
assault.
The final assault Is accom
plished by the demolition men.

The "pole charge" Is a device
resembling an ordinary brick
layer's hod and upon it is placed
a block of TNT The purpose of
this design is to enable the demo
lition men to lean the entire
charge against the pillbox aper
ture. As scon as the pillbox blows
up, the entire section moves for
ward for another attack. During
a landing operation, these tactics
are repeated by many squads
along a considerable front.
MACARONI CASSEROLE

A popular time and point saver is this
all-in-one main dish I created to help
you busy homemakers. Pop it into the
ovan and by the time the rest of the meal
is ready, out comes the main dish ready
for first honors.
fNo points are needed except for the
small amount of meat and margarine.
Here's how I make it:
6 to 8 or. macaroni 2 tbsp. fat
1 tbsp. salt 1 cup soft bread
6 cups boiling water crumbs
'j lb. hamburger 2 eggs
(or meat ground 1 Yi cups milk.

Vz tsp. salt 3 tsp. B-V
3 tbsp. minced 4 tbsp. margarined
onion crumbs
Cook macaroni in boiling salted water
IS min. or until tender; rinse and drain
well. Brown meat (which baa been
salted) and onion In the hot fat. Mix
macaroni, meat, bread crumbs and
beaten eggs. Add hot milk in which B-V
has been dissolved. Mix well, transfer to
well-oiled casserole, sprinkle margarined
crumbs over top and bake in moderatt
oven, 350 F for 50 min. or until a
knife, inserted in center, comes out
clean. Serves 6.
Complete the menu by serving green
beans, a tossed salad and milk with
chilled rhubaib sauce for dessert.

London (U.R) One of the last persons Joe Doakes of Pa
ducah meets in London is Lady Cholmondeley (pronounced
Chumley.)
Such a person not only actually exists, but answers an aver
age of a thousand questions a day from GI's at the Red Cross
Mostyn club here.
This charming Englishwoman,
who joined the Red Cross "be
cause I didn't know a thing
about Americans and wanted to
learn," says that the famous
pronunciation of her name has
reached the remotest ranches of
Texas, so that GI's do not com
ment on it. But in her two years
of dealing with them she has
achieved her purpose of getting
to know Americaas,.and here is
what this titled Englishwoman
has to say about Joe Doakes:
"He's the most eager person to
learn I've ever seen. His ques
tions range from sightseeing
to 'Why don't the British give
independence to India?'
"He is under the impression
that England got herself en
tangled in a mess and that he
was sent over here for the sole
purpose of rescuing us.
"He comes to England with an
anti-British chip on his shoulder.
He expects to find us rude,
superior and snobbish. I'm glad
to say he takes those criticisms
back after he's been here a few
months. But he never gets over
the impression he is here to save
England.
"He's the most homesick man
in the world. I really feel ter
ribly sorry for your boys because
they have such a difficult time
adjusting themselves. The other
foreigners In our midst are hap
pier. They left Europe as re
fugees and to them this country
is a haven of peace.
"Your soldiers strike us as
very naive. They are completely
unsophisticated. But we envy
them their whole-hearted enjoy
ment of things. They have far
more zest than we.
"The two things your soldier
dislikes most about England are
the climate and our habit of
understatement. He never gets
used to the latter no matter how
long he stays here."
Lady Cholmondeley said It
was encouraging to see how
much happier GI's are after they
have been in England several
months.
"Most of them finally settle
down and form warm English
friendships, she said.
In two years of answering
queries Lady Cholmondeley has
never boon stumped. Her most
difficult question came her first
day at work when a GI wanted
the address of a Mormon church.
She found him the only one In
Ennland at Bristol.
The majority of questions
fired at her fall into three cate
gories: sightseeing queries, look
ing up ancestors born in Eng
land, and requests as to how to
get an English present to send
to the folks back home.
"Sometimes," she sighed, "I
wish your countrymen weren't
such ancestor worshippers. They
frequently bring me an address
such as Shepherd's Lane, Lon
don. There may be half-a-dozen

Thousands of paratroopers

The surprise was shown in the
lack of opposition to the first
plane arriving over the drop
zone and the moderate and in
accurate flak encountered by
those which followed.
Night fighter opposition was
negligible, although the big
C-47's and C-53's which carried
up to 18 men each, were es
corted by allied night fighters
and intruders.
More than 20 quarts of cul
ture fluids are requi.cd to yield
one gram (.033) of an ounce of
penicillin.
AXIS AGENTS HAY

San Francisco, June 7 (U.R)
J. Edgar Hoover, chief of the
Federal Bureau of Investigation,
today warned the people of the
western hemisphere to stand on
guard against "dramatic" sabo
tage attempts by agents of axis
nations now under pressure of
allied invasion.
All German war prisoners in
this country are potential sabo
teurs who must be carefully
guarded by law enforcement of
ficers, Hoover said.
"The public must be constant
ly alert as the invasion advances
so there will be no backwash in
our security against the axis,"
the FBI chief said. "We can't
afford the delusion that every
thing is going so well now that
the war is practically over. It
isn't over. When the enemy is in
a corner we must expect drama
tic and intensified attempts at
sabotage by enemy agents in this
hemisphere."
Hoover urged the public to
report suspicious persons to FBI
or local law enforcement agents.
However, he asked individuals
not to personally investigate
such suspicious persons.
