diately following Gen. Eisen
hower's official announcement
that Allied forces were assault
ing fortress Europe from land,
sea and air.
Although police sirens Joined
in proclaiming the long await
ed news, few church officials
could be reached. The Trinity
Episcopal church threw open its
doors during the early morning
admitting more than 150 people
of all races and creeds including
many in uniform.
Grover Wiltiam, chief radio
man for the Portland-Vancouver
shipyards, said the workers re
ceive.: the news at the yard in
"kind of nervous expectancy."
Williams said that workers ig
nored their lunch while listen
ing to the news and later re
turned to work with "furious
energy."
Fire Dispatchers
Receive Training
Seven fire dispatchers are be
ing trained this week by M. L.
Tedrow, fire chief of the Rogue
River National Forest service, at
Camp Carberry in the Applegate.
Dispatchers are trained by the
service to receive the calls from
lookouts when forest fires are
reported, judge the requirements
of the blaze and to dispatch the
proper sized crews and proper
equipment for its control.

Yard Is Burned
Pittsburg, Cal., June 6 (U.R)
Federal Bureau of Investigation
agents today were investigating
a $2,500,000 fire which razed the
Redwood Manufacturing com
pany plant, reportedly the larg
est lumber yard in the world,
before 1000 fire fighters brought
the wind-whipped inferno under
control early Sunday morning.
Fire fighting units from six
towns, 300 soldiers and a coast
guard fire boat responded to the
frantic alarm which went out
Saturday night as the roaring
flames threatened several near
by war plants.

Washington, June 6. (U.R)
The U. S. escort carrier Block
Island was sunk last month in
the Atlantic as a rtsi.lt of enemy
action, the navy announced to
day. A navy communique said cas
ualties were light. It did not
specify the type of action in
which the "baby flat top" went
down.
The Block Island is the first
U. S. carrier to be lost in the
Atlantic. Its loss brought to six
the number of American car
riers lost in tliis war.
Only one of the other sunken
carriers the Liscome Bay,
which was sunk last November
in the Gilbert Islands operation
was a baby flat top.
The other four were the Lex
ington, Yorktown, Wasp and
Hornet, all sunk In the Pacific.
The sinking of the Block
Island brought to 126 the num
ber of combatant vessels lost by
the American navy in this war.
