chicken dinners for the next six
months as result of a govern
ment order requisitioning all
frozen chickens in storage as of
12:01 a. m. Thursday.
The War Food administration
ordered owners of frozen chick
ens to report their stocks to de
signated army quartermaster
centers within 10 days. They
will not be permitted to remove
or sell their supplies to any
other customer until at least
70,000,000 pounds are procured
to assure adequate chicken for
the services.
The poultry also Is destined
for the War Shipping ndminia
tration and the military hos
pitals. The WFA explained
that army buyers had sought in
vain to furnish ennurh chickens
for two Sunday chicken dinners
a month for the troops and fin
ally had to resort to govern
ment requisition. Chicken is
vital for convalescent service
men In hospitals.

and see a sick wife or something.

knew this was dance night!"
Meredith looked at the girl as
though she were a complete and not
very pleasant stranger.
Then Rosalie looked suddenly at
Evan an Intent, measuring gaze.
Deliberately, she walked around
him, Inspecting him from all
angles. And then she looked at
Meredith.
"How's for lending me him
tonight?" she demanded.
Startled, Meredith said, "What
are you talking about?"
"About Evan taking me to the
dance." answered Rosalie flatly.
"If I could show up with him. It
would set the other gals back on
their heels plenty! And give
Lieutenant Tim Abernethy some
thing to think about. It would show
him he can't stand me up an hour
before a dance begins. How about
It?"
llffEREDITH said curtly, "Rosalie,
"a you're being very silly and
childish. If a man has a Job to
do"
Rosalie turned rudely from
Meredith and looked up at Evan,
who was studying her curiously, a
hint of a smile In his coo) gray
eyes.
"Want to take me to the dance,"
she said archly. "I'm popular with
the stags, so you wont have to
dance with me if you don't want
to, once we get there. And It wruld
make Tim green-eyed with Jeal
ousy. How about being a pal and
throwing a drowning gal a straw?"
Evan laughed. "It might be fun
at that I"
Rosalie cried, "Oh, you sweet
thing!"
She whirled to dash out of the
room, but saw Meredith's face and
paused a moment.
"You don't mind, do you. Merry?"
she pleaded, suddenly sweet and
gentle and coaxing. "Jonathan's
dying to have a long confab with
you, and anyway. Evan might like
the dance Be a lamb. Merry, and
do let him go!"
"I dont seem to have much to
ay about it." answered Meredith
cooly. "If he wants to go. hell sol"
Rosalie grinned wickedly, swayed
towards Meredith, and whispered.
"Remember, darling. Jealousy Is so
old-fashioned!"
The next moment she had
danced out of the room and they
heard her flying foot-steps on the
stairs. .

OF WAR BONDS
The American public Is being
libuled by misinformation con
cerning the cost of selling war
bonds and the rate at which war
bonds are being cashed in. This
is ihe conclusion of Forrest E.
Cooper, district representative
of the Oregon war finance com
mittee, who reported this week
to N. H. Zacharisen, Jackson
county chairman. Cooper has
.
Just returned from a conference
of U. S. treasury executives
where plans were made for the
4th war loan scheduled for Janu
ary. The out-of-pocket cost of sell
ing war bonis is 133 of one per
cent, Cooper reported.
"Rumors about the high cost
of selling war bonds can be laid
to Ignorance or enemy propa
ganda," Zacharisen stated yester
day. "Only in- America could
billions of dollars be raised at
such low cost."
Concerning cashing in of war
bonds, Cooper - stated that the
number being turned In is much
smaller than state headquarters
had anticipated.
"Ninety-four of every 100 sav
ings bonds (Series E, F and O
sold since war bonds were first
introduced in May, 1941,' are
still in the hands of original
purchasers," Cooper stated.
