bloody battle In the mountains
of Italy a comparatively small
engagement, but one that gives
an Idea of the tough terrain over
which the allied armies are
shoving toward Rome. Perched
on a mountainside and equipped
with a telescope, Reynolds Pack

With Moroccan Troops In
Italy, Dec. 27 (U.R) They shed
their overcoats, toss away their
knapsacks, drop their rations on
the ground. They are wearing
American field Jackets, khaki
breeches and French helmets.
The Moroccans are about to
storm "The Hill of the Angry
Cat" -so-called because it re
sembles the arched back of a
cat and they are stripping for
action. Rifles, automatic pistols
and grenades are the only things
they are carrying into the bat
tle. Cannon Soften Foe
For IS minutes - shells have
been arching high and exploding
on "The Hill of the Angry Cat."
Our artillery is giving the place
a pasting in an attempt to soften
It up tor the Moroccans.
I swing my telescope to the
foot of the hill.

The Angry Cat" Is covered
with red bushes and outcrop
pings of gray granite. Through
the telescope the Moroccans look
like grasshoppers as they dodge
from bush tn rock and work
their way up the hill In single

files charging up the hill.
Now a column Is delayed by a
German machinegun nest. I can
see the Moroccans spread around
to the enemy's flank. Then the
Moroccans charge upon it from
behind It's all over in a few
seconds. It's slaughter.
The side of the peak Is heavily
mined. Several Moroccans are
blown to bits, but the columns
never waver.
Victory Attained
Now the Moroccans are ap
proaching the summit. The top
of "The Angry Cat" bristles with
scrubby trees, under which the
Germans have machinegun nests
dominating one of the most im
portant highways in the eastern
sector of the American Fifth
Army front
Suddenly figures can be seen
silhouetted on top of the hiU.
They are Germans, bands lifted
In surrender.
It is 11:30 a. m. lust an hour
and one-half after the troops be
gan their ascent.
Down in the valley, mule car
avans are starting up laden with
the overcoats of the victorious
Moroccans and boxes of Ameri
can C and K rations. The ration
boxes are labelled ."no pork.1
The Moroccans are hungry after
battle but they are Moslems,

Struggling up to the cashier's
cage with his load of shrimp,
stuffed olives, anchovies, crack
ers, maraschino cherries and
other tidbits, Vic was Just about
as happy as he'd been since com
ing into the' Army. Then came
the blow. "Soldier, you must
have been saving up a lot of
points, to buy all that stuff,"
said the cashier, as she started
working out on the adding ma

the shelf, he was heard to mut
