(Special Correspondence) In
my Annual Forecast of the
Business and Financial Outlook
for 1944, which will be puD-
liahprl In this DSOtT SOOH, I
shall make some very definite
predictions regarding business,
politics and the war. Now,, a
1943. draws to a close and par
ticularly on thla day before
Christmas, I wish tp. point out
that It has been for most of us
a pretty good year. As we
give and receive Christmas pre
sents, we should also ODserve
the day In its true light of
Christmas Holiness. Remember
we are not celebrating any ord
inary holiday. We are .observ
ing the birth of Christ and keep
ing alive, as men have done for
centuries before us, the spirit
of His message.
Should Be Thankful For
Freedom Of America
At Christmas, more than at
any other time, we should be
thankful that we are Americans;
thankful that we worship as we
please and thankful that we
may bring up our children and
our grandchildren In a demo
cracy which, despite political
bickerings, remains true. For
many families of all nations the
casualty lists will make their
Christmas season a sad one.
Whatever our feelings are
against enemy nations, all these
bereaved families should be re
membered In our Christmas
prayers.
Those of us at home, safe and
surrounded by conveniences
and many luxuries, should ap
preciate that there la still a
war In fact many wars going
on. Hence, there should be no
let-down in our home-front bat
tles. War as such is unknown
to the vast majority of us. To
most families and Individuals,
It Is a remote state of affairs activity and civilian lnccnvenl
which we have become accus- ences may then be on the west
tomed to read about and to
voice opinions about. For most
people, 1943 meant better jobs,
more money and, despite short
ages, more goods In the house.
Income For Year
Is Greatest Ever
Americans will have received
more In income in 1943 than in
any previous year. Our na
tional Income for the year will
approach $142,600,000,000. This
compares with $114,000,000,000
received In 1942. Remember
this Is Income received solely by
individuals. Money in people's
pockets and hide-aways per per
son at the end of 1943 amounts
to about $190 compared with
$104.98 for December, 1942.

ures apply to every man,

that although this money has

Stores and customers have felt
the lack of many civilian goods,
but plans are now under way
to manufacture Items which
have not been produced for
months. These consist mainly
of household goods, although
the government list to date con
tains some 700 Items.
Production Boom
Jak May Arrive
Our wartime production boom
lay have reached Us peak this
year. Last June was the high
point of 1943. Since then pro
duction has been leveling out
along with total war costs. If
the war should temporarily go
against us, armament produc
tion will be hiked again, but
this does not now appear likely.
Total' Industrial output, which
Includes both production for
war and for civilian require
ments, stands at the highest
point in history.
War costs , were about $146,-

tieth. This Is about $3,900,000,

receive in incomes in 1943, If
It were possible for everyone In
the country to donate 'their
year s Income, we would about
break even on war costs to
date. When Germany Is de
feated, war costs can be cut
sharply. The center of war

Food And Employment
Better This Year
A year ago the supply of
foods was really short and the
war outlook was not so good.
Government purchases for mili
tary needs were taking about
everything In sight. However,
we have got along pretty well
under point rationing. The
War Food administration Is now,
however, releasing millions of
cases of canned goods. The Of
fice of Price administration even
says the country can look for
ward to mora meat In 1944.
