Plans For Second Front.
By J. Edward Murray;
United Press Staff Correspondent
London, Deo. J3 U,R) Pre

day and Radio Vichy said Gen.
Dwltjht D. Elsenhower, whom
Washington dispatches have pre

(A CBS broadcast said tre

In some places, It said, whole
English villages have been
evacuated to make space for the
thousands of troops, whll the
huge concentration of equip
ment, landing barges, tanks and
planes is "obvious to the most
casual dockside observer.")
Arrival Expeeted .
The Vichy broadcast could not
be confirmed officially, but It
wss obvious that the second
front commander would have to
come here soon If the Invasion
is to bein within the next three
and a half months, aa anticipat
ed. Gen. Henri Honor Gtraud,
commander of the French army
of liberation, also will come to
England from Algiers shortly,
the Nail-controlled Vichy - sta
tion said. It asserted that Gen
Fir Harold R. L. G. Alexander.
Allied commander in Italy and
deputy Mediterranean eomman
den, would succeed Elsenhower
aa sum-erne Mediterranean com'
mander.
The London Dally mall said
It now could be disclosed that
British railways ware engaged
In movement of troop, equip
ment and supplies to bass oolnte
for the invasion of western
Europe, "the most gigantic trans
port operation they ever have
undertaken."
"This huge task underlies the
grave warning repeated isst
nlht that people must keep the
railways clear during the Christ
mas period," the Dally Mail said.
War Transport Minister Lord
Leathers had backed the warn
ings of the railway axecutlve
committee with all his author
ity."
Troops rim
The movement of troops and
war supplies has taken pres.
edence over the transportation
of mall, the Dally Mall said
German preparations to parry
the Invasion of western Europe
also appeared entering an ed
vsnced ataee with a carefully
worded DNB dlostch tacitly con
firming recent Swedish reoorta
that Marehsl Erwln Rommel will
direct the defense of Adolf Hit

The broadcast said Rommel
had been commissioned "to ex
amine the state of preparedness
01 European defenses" and re
ported he had arrived at the
headnuarters of Marshal Gerd
von Rundftedt, German com
mander In France.
"In addition to holding rllanie.
slons. Rommel will undertake ex,
tensive Inspection tours to ex
amine -the defensive strength of
the Atlantic wall and the strik
ing power of German Kserva
stationed there." DNB said
'A German broadcast haarrl hv
