burgh last night and outlasted
him to take a colorless 10-round

Zivlc, obviously showing that
he had been to the ring wars
once too often, tried to counter
Zannelli'i powerful rights with
Infighting, but his punches gen
erally were Ineffective, though
he rallied slightly toward the

cial end of the most successful
duck and goose season in many
a year in the Klamath basin.
Unofficially, the season has al
ready ended for many hunters
due to the shortage of ammunition.
Despite the lack of shells,
most bird shooting enthusiasts
declare the season one of more
limits per hunter than can be
recalled. One old-timer even
went so far as to say that the
season of 1943 compares favor
ably with "the good old days"
when the flights of migratory
fowl are said to "have complete
ly obliterated the sun."

time-honored song "If I had the
Wings of an Angel, Over These
Prison Walls I Would Fly" still
Is sung to the same tune by
Illinois .convicts, but hundreds
of them a;-8 trying to change it
to "If I Had a Writ of Habeas
Corpus" and get their freedom.
More than 2,000 convicts; en
couraged by the success of
some of their fellows, have de
luged Illinois state and federal
courts and law enforcement of
ficials with applications for
writs of habeas corpus or of
error in a mass effort to go free,
officials estimate here.
The deluge began about a
year ago, according to State
Safety Director T. P. Sullivan,
who supervises four Illinois
state prisons, at Joliet, State-
ville, Pontiac and Menard.
John Bongiorono, serving 199
years in connection with killing
a policeman, started the flood
when he filed for a habeas cor
pus writ last fall. One hundred
and ninety-nine years, he said,
is an "inhuman" sentence.
So prisoners, often through
their lawyers or letters ad
dressed to judges and other of
ficials, began petitioning for
freedom by the hundreds. Many
were too poor to hire lawyers,
said Sullivan, so they wrote
"home-made" pleas asking rela
tives and friends to take up
their fight for freedom through
a lawyer.
Of the 2,000 pleas, Sullivan
said, more than 200 already
have passed through the state
supreme court. All except
about 20 appeals were denied,
and on 14 of these hangs the
fate of almost 1,500 others who
now are serving "recommended"
maximum sentences.

of the state to keep them in
prison on the ground: they are
being held beyond "reoom-
menaed" maximum sentences.

today against three men in what
was believed to be the first ac
tion of its kind since the war
time liquor shortage prompted

Carl R. Myer, 37, of New York,
Abraham Mass, 63, and Joseph
Hillgen 48, both of Philadelphia,
conspired in the purchase of
liquor -through regular channels
for resale in Philadelphia at
prices 100 per cent above ceil

off a walkout that left the capi

24 hours.

War Labor board for violating

of their contract dispute with
