News From Jackson County for
Men in the Armed Services

This week's news has been a
combination of influenza and
bad weather mixed up with
Christmas parties and programs,
pre-season basketball games and
stories about men and women in
service. . .
A Christmas touch was given
the landscape this week by a
thick fog and freezing tempera
tures which coated trees and
shrubs with white frost and the
roads and streets with ice, the
latter resulting in many minor
auto accident. The thermom
eter fell to 22 a couple of nights
.The influenza' epidemic is of
mild proportions so far, but has
resulted in small attendance at
schools, disrupting of newspaper
routes and reduction of business
staffs. With the pressman and
his assistant both ill, the Ash
land Tiding was forced to cease
publication for one day and then
resumed with the loan of a
pressman from the Tribune
staff.
With only one regular and
but four lettermen In all from
last year's basketball squad
practice for the hoop season has
started at Medford high. Coach
ing now is Lies Grant, moved up
from the Junior high school
staff. Dale Niedermeyer is the
sole regular out for practice and
the other three lettermen are
Bob Welsenburger, Harry Nord
wick and Doug Plumley. The
squad,. numbering 35, had been
working out under direction of
J. C Tucker and Chuck Clay.
The conference season starts
Jan. 7 and 8 with Roseburg com
ing here for two games. Smaller
schools of the county have been
playing pre-season games for the
past two weeks. . .
Playing basketball, but not for
Medford Hi, is Hob Deuel, Jr.,
who has been named as one of
19 cadets for the hoop team at
Culver Military academy in In
diana. Another former Medford
High basketball player in the
service news is Billy Piche, who
writes from-England where he
is stationed. Piche, specialist
tint class in the navy, wrote last
to say that he was helping to
stage a show for the entertain
ment of American servicemen in
his area. '

word that Lt. Kenneth Ward of
Gold Hill, Flying Fortress pilot,
has been awarded an air model

Sgt. Victor Dallaire of the
North Africa staff of Stars and
Stripes remembered his Medford
friends with novel Christmas
cards showing a map of North
Africa and the Mediterranean
area. The sergeant wrote that he
arrived in North Africa a year
ago in November and had want
ed to leave ever since.
Word from Philip Bralnerd is
to the effect that he has been
made non-commissioned photo
graphic officer in charge of the
western signal corps center,
Camp Kohler, Calif., and also
of western signal corps college
at Davis. Pvt. Jessie V. Ham
aker has completed paratrooper
training at Ft. Benning, Ga", and
has been awarded his "wings
and boots.".

student at Indiana university,
was on the scholastic honor roll
for last term; Second Lt. Aaron
J." Ayres, Flying Fortress co
pilot, temporarily stationed at
V.'cndover Field In Utah and
Aviation Cadet Del Cooley has
completed pre-flight at Ellington
Field and is now attending
aerial gunnery school at King
man, Ariz. Thomas Pittock has
been promoted to staff sergeant
at Wilmington,. Del., where he Is
a radio operator, and Edward L
Kyker has been promoted to
technician 'fifth grade at Ft.
Knox. Earl Jones, completing a'
radio course in the ' marine
school at San Diego, has been
made a corporal.
Cadet John Saulsberry ar
rived this morning to spend a
few days' leave. He received his
aerial gunnery wings at Las
Vegas Monday and upon leaving
here will report to Victorville,
Calif., to bombardier school. Lt.
Nell Iven recently graduated
from Victorville and was home
afterwards on a brief leave
Here this week is Lt. Curtis
Barnes of the naval reserve, and
his bride, the former Janet
Eames of San Francisco. Lt.
Barnes has been on duty in the
South Pacific area and will now
report in Miami, Fla., for spe
cial training.
Second Lt. Boyd Bellamy
completed his bombardier-navigator
training at Kirtland Field,
N. M., and has left for Tampa,
Fla., after a short leave here.

been transferred to the Air
WAC and is with a recruiting
team now in Minnesota. Pt
Vilm had been stationed at
Lowry Field, Denver, before her
transfer. Pvt. LaMurle Witt has
finished basic WAC training at
Ft. Des Moines and is awaiting
orders. Pvt. Witt's husband, Sgt
Richard Witt, is in New Guinea
with the army air corps and her
brother, Cpl. Alfred M. Beck, is
an AAF mechanics' instructor at
Yuma, Ariz.
Several weddings have been
in the news. Lt. James Henry

month in California to Lorraine
Evelyn Ude of Long Island; Jane
Moffi'.t and Lt. Frank A. Prime
were married here Dec. 8, anil
will live here for the present;
Cleo Williams and Cpl. Donald

ried Nov. 29 to Lt. Charles
Welch. The latter couple will
also live in Medford. Janet Hurd
of Eagle Point is now Mrs.
Phillip E. Thompson. Her hus

tioned at Camp White. Martha
Gearthart of Ashland was mar
ried to Onnls Grieve of Prospect
in a ceremony at the Oakland
Naval hospital, where the groom

The Community Chest drive
continues here and it was an
nounced this week that Granges
of the county had contributed
$1,703.30 to the drive. This Is
all to go into the National War
Fund division of the chest drive.
Three thousand pounds of
usable clothing were collected
during the recent discarded
clothing drive - and will be
shipped abroad for the relief of
people in the war areas.
Because of the shortage ol
liquor, forms of bootlegging are
springing up and this week a
San Francisco man was arrested
here and charged with illegal
possession of 69 cases of whis
key. The man claimed they
were a present for a brother-in-law

DISCLAIMS HEROISM

U.R) Lt. Franklin D. Roosevelt,
Jr., today disclaimed any credit
for saving the life of Coxswain
Nunzio Camarrata in the Sici
lian campaign, declaring he only
performed his duty.
Roosevelt got the Purple
Heart as result of the action,
and was credited by Camarrata
with saving the sailor's life.
The president's son was in the
Mediterranean eight months and
saw "plenty of action."
The Oregon State Tuberculo
sis Hospital, located southeast of
Salem, was opened In 1910 with
50 beds and has been gradually
increased to its present capacity
of 320 beds.

trol, told the senate Judiciary

liquor shortage today.
