Consideration of 1944 football
schedules was deferred until the

DEFEATS JVILLE
Rogue River high school bas
ketball quintet defeated the
Jacksonville high team on the
Jacksonville floor last night by
a score of 19 to 19, with Dimlck
of Rogue River scoring 9 points
to become high point man. In
the preliminary game, played
between B squads of the two
schools, Jacksonville took the
long end of 10 to 0 score.
Coaches for the two teams
are William Bromley for Jack
sonville, and Ken Toner for
Rogue River. Referee for the
contests was Norman Sting, new
coach at Medford Junior high
school.

Central Point, Dec. IS In a
stubbornly fought contest at
Central Point last night the
Grants Pass hoopsters downed
the Pointers 22 to 20. Smith was
high point man for the Cavemen
with 11 markers, .while Shrier
ran up 9 for the Pointers.
T w e n t y-three fouls were
called, 13 on visitors and 10 on
the Pointer squad.
According to Superintendent
Jewett, no more games will be
played by the Pointers until the
opening conference game with
Gold Hill January 7.

Ju Jitsu, or Judo, Is taught the
soldiers by former civilian in
structors and wrestlers. They
teach the MPs bow to take into
custody an unruly soldier with
out Injuring him and, more im
portant, how to disarm a man
who has the drop on him with a
gun, knife or bayonet. .,
This school makes them gen
tlemen MPs who leave here for
specialized training in some par
ticular branch of the service,
but beneath the silken glove is
a hand of steel, trained to meet
any emergency.

FATHER SLAYS CHILDREN

Police reported that Charles Ho
sack, 35, slashed the throats of
two of his three children today,
while his wife was out borrow
ing a cup of sugar, and then
cut his own wrists. .The chil
dren died. His condition is criti
cal. He had been under treat
ment for a mental disturbance.

war department finally has re
alized that the soldier is a valu
able piece of government prop
erty, not to be crippled for life
by an MP the first time he steps
out of line.
Here at the military police re
placement training center, where
gentlemen MPs get their basic
training, the men go through a
tough 17-week course that turns
them Into small-arms experts
adept at street fighting and
hand-to-hand combat. .
The men are trained in the use
of rifles, tommy guns, machine
guns, carbines revolvers, hand
grenades, mortars and the stick,
with emphasis on discretionary
use of the latter.
If the man he Is after Is the
enemy, the MP can use the com
mando tactics he's taught In Ju
Jitsu classes but if he is an un
ruly soldier,. treat him gently but
firmly, using Just enough pres
sure to make him step back into
line.
"Never bring your stick down
squarely on a soldier s skull,
the MP is told, "but hit him a
light, glancing blow on the tem
ple and knock him out; or slap
him on the back of the upper leg
Just hard enough to paralyze a
muscle for a few minutes. But,
above all, don't cripple him
Medical treatment for soldiers
costs money.
Hollywood movies have led us
to believe that all an MP does
is keep soldiers on the street
looking GI and. breaking up
fights with sailors,
This is true so far as It goes.
The MP is the man who quietly
tells a soldier to "button up
when he sees him walking down
the street with his coat open.
And when it comes to fighting.
he still is a pretty tough guy to
contend with.
But the MPs here are trained
primarily for combat duty. When
a landing barge carries a group
of soldiers ashore on an inva
sion, you nearly always find a
man with an MP brassard on his
arm in it. His job is to direct
traffic and keep equipment flow
ing freely inland to supply the
fighting men. '
In one Instance In the Tunis
ian campaign, when Rommel's
Afrlka Korps was pounding the
Yanks with more than they could
handle, and a retreat was or
dered, a detail of MPs was told
to stay behind . until every ve
hicle had been directed through
the area being evacuated. In that
case alone, 27 MPs were lost.
They, too, are expendable. .
The military police also do
"mop-up" work. When an army
has the enemy on the run, it may
by-pass a town where some of
the foe are entrenched and let
the MPs go in and clean them
out.
This Is where they use the
street-fighting tactics taught at
Fort Custer, where a dummy
village, "HltlervUle," has been
constructed to give them experi
ence in cleaning snipers out of
buildings.
They work In teams of three.
While a machine-gunner plays a
stream of bullets down the street
where land mines explode to
simulate artillery fire, the men
creep from building to building,
cleaning out the town. The ad
vance man in the team carries
a pistol. He is covered by the
tommy-gunner. The third man
carries a carbine. He remains
some distance behind his two
companions to pick off any en-
