with flu this weekend. Superin

Persons who do not get their
copies of the Mail Tribune as
early as usual or who fan to re
ceive them at all, were asked to
day by Circulation Manager Ger
ald Latham to be tolerant. He
explained the sketchy service by
stating that most of the high
school boys usually relied on to
work as carriers are now em
ployed in stores and that smaller
boys, less experienced, are han
dling the routes. Comolicatint!

age of even the younger boys and
the current flu epidemic which
has taken many off the job tem
porarily.
Citing an example of his prob
lem, La mam said that Friday aft
ernoon 9 out of 30 boys handling
regular city routes were ill. and
that only 2 regular substitutes
were available. Delivery of the
papers was accomplished only by
doubling up some of the routes,
with some of the boys doing the
work of two or three.
Difficulty was experienced in
delivering the Sunday paper on
route 16, in the northwest cor
ner of town, when both the reg
ular carrier and substitute were
ill, the fact not being discovered
until 7:30 a. m. Harold Skinner,
another carrier, and Verne Shan-
gle, Jr., a substitute, together
handled three routes Sunday, fin-
isning tne last route 16. about
11 a. m.
Latham stated today that per
sons failing to receive a copy of
ine xriDune should telephone
the Tribune office between 6 and
6:20 p. m. the same day on week
days, or between 9 and Iff a. m.
on Sundays. Those who fall to
call during: those hours should
call the next morning rather
than waiting until the next aft
ernoon. He also asked that sub

The father draft issue remained
a complicated puzzle today after
a week-end of confusing state
ments that did nothing to alter
prospects that about 1,000,000
pre-Pearl Harbor fathers may be
included by July.
But even that number may be
reduced as result of two pros
pective developments still in the
study stage. These were:
1. A plan to cancel all occupa
tional deferments now held by
men in the age group from 18 to
22.
2. Possibility that the army
and navy will agree to rela
physical requirements so that
some of the estimated 3,600,000
single and childless married men
classified 4-F can be inducted.
Age Group Confusion
Chairman Andrew J. May, D.
Ky., of the House Military Af
fairs committee, had announced
that selective service would
draft fathers by age groups
starting with those under 22, but
this subsequently was said to
have resulted from a misunder
standing of the proposal to can
eel deferments tor the 18-2i
group, which includes only a
few pre-Pearl Harbor fathers.

service officials gave this pic
ture of the draft problem:
The - total strength of the
armed forces now is 10,100,000
of which 7,400,000 are' in the
army and 2,700,000 in the navy.
To reach goals for July 1, 1944.
the army will need 300,000, the
navy 900,000 and replacements
about 700,000. or a total of 1A
900,000. -
Three Million Deferred
To fill these requirements
there are about 100,000 youths
coming Into military age each
month but less than half avail
able for selective service, or less
than 300,000 available by July
In addition there are about 3,
000,000 men deferred for war
jobs or service In agriculture
and possibly a fifth of this num
ber. or 600,000 could be reclas
sified. Together with 'teen age
draftees, this would make avail
able a force of about 900,000
men. leaving still another 1,000
000 to go, and the largest pool
of men remaining would De inai
made up of pre-Pearl Harbor
fathers.
