Talent Methodist History
Traced In Dinner Program
History of the Methodist
church in Talent was traced by
members Wednesday evening
when about 40 persons gathered
for a covered dish dinner and
ft program at the church. Clarence
Holdridge, toastmaster intro
duced Mrs. Charley Holdridge
who described the construction
of the first Methodist church
building in Talent, begun in
1909, less than a year after the
Holdridge family settled in that
locality. Soon after other fam
ilies named Fuller, Yeo, and
Forbes, arrived and took an ac
tive part in the church. George
H. Wade was the first pastor.
E. T. Newbry, Sr., was pre
sented and added to Mrs. Hold
ridge's account of the early his
tory of Talent's religious devel
opment. Mr. and Mrs. Newbry
came to Talent nearly 23 years
ago, and are living on their
ranch in Valleyview. .
Rev. Edward Deacon, retired
Methodist minister, came to Tal
en 17 years ago and for 11 yea:s
taught a Bible class at the
church. He is still active in
church affairs.
Mrs. Clarence Holdridge sang
a solo, 'The Little Church of my
Childhood Days." Miss Lois
Thompson, a student at South
ern Oregon College of Educa
tion, gave a talk on "What Tins
Church Means to Me." Agnes
Lacey, also a student at S.O.C.E.,
spoke-on her relationship with
the church.
The Rev. Dr. G. W. Bruci
pastor of the church, gave a brief
address on "Thj Value and In
fluence of a Church in the Com
munity." The program closed
with benediction by the pastor.

National Rating

Education, Ashland, Dec. 10.
The Southern Oregon College
of Education chapter of F.T.A.
(Future Teachers of America)
has been given rank among the
12 highest rated chapters in the
nation, according to the Na
tional Year Book of 1943.
F.T.A. is a junior branch of

tion. Notifying the chapter of
this distinction, Miss Ethel
Blake, secretary of the national
committee of F.T.A., stated

side speakers, reading and
equipment for teachers.

Ashland; Agnes Lacy and Lois

Lions Club Raises
$142.30 for Chest
With Auction Sale
Medford Community Chest
was benefited by $142.30 yester
day as a result of an auction sals
and evening of cards held by
members of the Lions club at
Mrs. Ehrheart's chicken dinner
place Wednesday evening. Fol
lowing the weekly dinner, Frank
J. (Red) Cullen went into action
as auctioneer and sold sucb items
as poultry, clothing, automobile
accessories and groceries, all do
nated by members of the club for
the special auction sale.
Needs of the War Chest were
stressed in a speech by Earl Mil
ler, president of the local club.
George Goodman was in charge
of the program. DonRoe was
introduced as a new member, and
Mel S tames was a guest for the
evening.

40 NEW CITIZENS
RECEIVE PAPERS
Citizenship papers were grant
ed yesterday in circuit court pro
ceedings to 30 soldiers stationed
at Camp White, and 10 civilians.
The new citizens were addressed
by Col. W. H. Paine, Mrs. Marie
D'Albini, and Mrs. T. F. Gilford
representing patriotic organiza
tions. Reading of the "Creed of
an American," and singing of
the national anthem closed the
exercises.

ranged today for Edgar Allan
Woolf, 54, veteran film writer,
who died yesterday from in
juries received in a fall at his
home.

present salon prints taken, de
veloped and printed by Camera
club members themselves. The
display is almost completed and
ready (or exhibit, according to

Al Lundqulst. It will be pre
sented for showing in the music
room of Riverside USO, and
will Include shots of Crater
Lake, Camera club outings,'
mountain scenes and others.
Since its inception the River
side Camera club has grown

day, Dec. 3, called to order by
the vice president, Ilene Yocum
The minutes were read and ap
proved, and roll call taken.
Election of officers resulted as
follows: President, Datton Lem-
ely; vice president, Glen Wil
liams; secretary, Frances uaw
son; treasurer, Mr. McCracken:
and reporter, Allcne Owens. In
dividual clubs were organized.
A short program was held,
with Mrs. Lemely giving a talk
on how she felt about our year's
work. Mr. Owens gave a talk on
how he thought we made a
showing. Ruth Yoccum spoke
about her enjoyment of her du
ties on the refreshment commit
tee. Frances and Barbara Dawson
and Allene Owens sang a song,
accompanied by Allene Owens
at the piano. Mr. Jossy then gave
a short speech and presented
members with pins and cards.
Refreshments were served and

by the new president.
