the fay crowd. Then, one night,
Clarice dies from an overdose of
sleeping tablets. It's apparently
suicide, for her will is found on
her dressing table, along with a
valuable ruby brooch labeled
"For Denlse. However her ec
centric maid, Lena, insists that
ahe had only one sleeping tablet
In her possession that night.
When the police Investigate,
Joyce casta suspicion on Denlse
by claiming that Clarios had no
Intention of leaving the brooch
to Denlse, but that Denlse coveted
H because ber father gave It to
- Clarice. Then, Joyce has an un
' explained fit of hysterics. The
next morning. Eileen accidental
ly learns from a druggist that a
girl answering Denlse's descrip
tion recently tried to buy some of
the drug that killed Clarice,
Eileen de'eldes to ask Denlse
about this and goes to her room
to see her. ,
CHAPTER XXI

Denlse called, "Yes? Who la
It?"
"It's Eileen. May I come In?"
"Yes, come In."
Denlse was sitting at her Uttered
dressing table rubbing perfumed oil

ders. She met Eileen's eyes In the
mirror.
"What Is It?"
"There's something I want to
say to you, Denlse. It's not fright
fully easy , . . but I really feel I
ought to."
"Then it's bound to be something
unpleasant. All right, get on. I can
take It," Denlse said.
She went on pounding the oil
Into one plump shoulder, but her
eyes never left Eileen's in the mir
ror. "I was up the s ',eet at the drug
tore Just now not Cobb's, but the
other man near the flower shop,"
Eileen said. "We were talking about'
people trying to get drugs without
prescriptions and he happened to
mention that one day last week a
girl came In and tried to buy some
Seconal."
"Boms Seconal?"
"Yes. And and " Eileen floun
dered. "And he described you, Den
lse." Denlse sat suddenly still. "How
did he describe me?"
"He said the girl was driving a
big cream-colored Bentley and
wearing a very striking necklace
of gold mesh and links."
Instinctively, they both dropped
their eyes to the necklace which
was lying on the dressing table.
'I'HEN Denlse suddenly laughed.

"I'm so glad. Eileen, to be able
to set your mind at rest about me.
I didn't go Into that drug store.
It must have been Joyce."
"Joyce?"
"Yes. I was rather doubtful about
the clasp of my necklace. I thought
the spring was getting a bit weak,
Joyce was going In to lunch at
Mom's one day last week and I

Denlse spoke slowly and clearly.
You could see she was enjoying
herself. She turned back to the
mirror and spread mors oil on her
skin.
Eileen stood there, shocked and
silent. Was this the truth or was
Denlse lying?
Denlse smiled. "You're wonder
ing if I'm telling the truth. Well,
you needn't. I'm sure this druggist
friend of yours will be able to iden
tify Joyce if the detectives ask
him."
"Oh, no, nol" Eileen cried. "Why
should Joyce have tried to buy
Seconal?"
"Isn't that rather an Ingenuous
question? You know quite well what
you're thinking and I know what
I am." Denlse got up and came to
ward Eileen. "You can't face that
about Joyce, can you, because she's
Felix's sister? But you were ready
enough to think that I murdered
Clarice; and I believe you were glad
to think St!"
"What what do you mean?"
Eileen stammered.
"You know what I mean. Fells
Is mine, Eileen, and you're not going
to take him from me."
EILEEN drew back. "I'm not tak
ing him from you. I didn't do
a thing. He came willingly.1'
"Your methods were very quiet.
I admit, but you were active all the
time. You tried to snatch him from
the first moment you came here."
Eileen's temper started to rise. "I
didn't try to snatch Felix, as you
call It. If he's In love with me,
that's Just yOur bad luck I"
"Oh. Is It? Luck Isn't the only
thing that counts In love. People,
can be clever, too. And let me tell
you, I'm clever enough to see that
Felix doesn't get away from me."
"Oh? How are you going to stop
him?"
"Felix naturally fell for that
wide-eyed look of Innocence you've
got. He hasn't seen much of It
around here and it's something
fresh. But If you went away to
morrow, he'd forget you by tomor
row night."
Denlse's words made Eileen feel
Insecure. What chance had she,
she thought, in competition with
Denlse? Beside Denlse. she felt
like an awkward schoolgirl.
"Well, I'm not going away," she
said firmly. "I'm staying right
here."
"Are you? He might ask you to
go before rm done."
"I don't think so."
"You made a mistake, Eileen, by
telling me this about Joyce. If
you'd been Just a little .cleverer,
you'd have found out more about
It before you went blurting It out.
Joyce Is Felix's sister: he's got to
protect her."
"You don't mean you'd threaten
to tell the detectives?"
"He's got to protect her," Denlse
repeated, "from a murder charge.1
perhaps. Joyoe tried to buy Seconal.
And there's something else I know
about her."
"What? What do you know?"
Denlse smiled secretly. "Never
mind, rm not going to tell vou.
Joyce knows that I know. That's
why she had that fit of hysterics."
The two girls stood staring at
each other In open enmity.

Eileen thought,- She turned and
went quickly out of the room.

suggestion lor bringing Japa
nese internees into the midwest
to teach farmers sanitation and
efficiency.
George Wilson, a farmer near
Sacramento, said he knew the
Japanese well, because before
the war they predominated in
the region where he lived.
Mora Japs In School -
There were more Japanese
children attending the schools
where my children jgo, Wilson
said, "than there were American
children."
Commenting on the WRA
statement, Wilson said:
The Japanese take - many
baths, as frequently as one a
day but there is all the dif
ference in the world between
their baths and sanitation.''
He said whole families of
Japs bathe in the same tub
without changing the water,
and that the make-shift tubs
"are filled with scum when the
family finishes its bathing."
"It is ridiculous to think that
the Japanese can come into the
mid-west and teach the Amers

sanitation or efficiency," Wilson

can get along without them
