Pacific, Nov. 24. (U.PJ Sharks
'that tore the fishhooks off their
lines limited four airmen adrift
In a rubber boat to a diet 'of
two fish -and rainwater for the
ix days they floated aimlessly
about In the Pacific.
The story was told today by
Naval Lieut Paul Hardy of
Huntington, W. Va., pilot of a
naval land plane that crash
landed in the ocean, out of gas
and lost. The crew of 10
escaped but a marine combat
correspondent was lost.
Launch Tiro Rafts
Ensign James Welshorne of
Keyser, W. Va., co-pllot, came
out of the plane with a broken
arm, his face covered with blood
and bleeding badly, and nearly
unconscious.
The airmen could get only
two life rafts out of the plane
and one of these capable of

"We. had no water for 50
hours," Hardy said. "Then a
rain squall gave us all enough
to drink and we saved enough
water from it so we each had
a couple of sips a day. We
saved it by taking water into
our mouths, then transferring it
into a Mae West jacket.
"The other raft was roped to
us for awhile the first night but
the rope broke and we were un
able to see them in the morn

The two rafts were picked up

"We had no food. We had
some fish line and four hooks.
but no bait and were unable to
fish until two days later when
an old wooden crate floated
longside. There were three

poison. All of us ate some
perch raw. It tasted swell.
"Sharks were with us from
the first morning, usually five
or 10 of them right around the
raft. I think they were mostly
curious, but when we baited the
hooks to fish the sharks tore
two of them loose right away.
"On the third hook we got a
small shark and brought him
into the boat. We thought may
be we would eat part of him,
but he was about four feet long
and after he had been in the
boat a few seconds it was obvi
ous that either he would have
to leave or we would. We
couldn't use our knives for fear
of cutting through the rubber
life raft and drowning us all,
so we pushed him over the side
again. By then all of our bait
was gone.
Sharks Nose Swimmers
"We all tried to swim some
every day except Welshorne.
Every time the sharks came
right up. But I am still not
convinced they really would at
tack a man. A couple of times
they rushed the swimmers but
didn't turn over as if to bite
and acted more like they were
just curious and planned to
touch the swimmers to see what
would happen."
Days and nights of hearing
and- seeing occasional planes
were climaxed by an obviously
searching plane they were afraid

completed, Premier Marshal
Badoglio today pleaded for
equipment for Italy's army and
bread for her people and said
that Italians desired to contri
bute to the liberation of their
country "with their own blood.'
The provisional government's
objectives, Badoglio said, were
to help in every way possible,
particularly with Italian troops
at the side of the Allies, to
chase the Germans from Italy,
and to maintain order in the
rear zones.

special army digest entitled "Les
sons From the Tunisian cam
paign" said today that the inex
perienced American troops who
chased the Nazis out of North
Africa made many costly errors
before the final victory was
theirs.
At the beginning of the cam
paign, it said, the Americans
were particularly unversed In
tank warfare and did not learn
to mass armored units until late
In the campaign. In the early
stages of fighting, tanks were
dispersed over a wide area in
piecemeal fashion.
Another lesson, the report
said, was that soldiers other
than the engineers must learn
to clear land mines and booby
traps. Before this fact was driven
home, many troops died need'
lessly.
The study cited an examnle

observation post reported thro
Italians coming down a hill. The
information that reached the
command post said that "three
battalions" were on the way.
American artillery was a
standout One Nad who had
served on several German fronts
said fire from U. S. field guns
"was the most deadly he had
experienced," the report said.
Scouting and patrolling caused
some trouble at first, but the
men improved rapidly with experience.
