Observations
The mall came. You know
what the headlines of the papers
were. Though they told of vic
tories for us, yet I knew the
price of those victories, A dreary
world, I thought-
Letters, too, and the first one
I opened was from s lad who

simple account of a simple con
tribution to living: "Mickey is
a young pigeon a neighbor gava
to my boy, who washed his
hands ot the feeding process;
so along with my other work
I have to cram Mickey's greiidy
little craw with bread and milk
twice daily.
"Where ever I go. she files
along. She's curious about the
garden and my activity in it
and seeing me pick beans, she .
took hold of a pod and did her
best to pull It from the vine.
Before sh learned to boom
and coo, she- whistled a sharp,
alarming 'Slrrr, sirrr." Ws think
she has a human sense of mod-
esty, for when wa so to the
bathroom, If we do not shut
the door, she whistles a repri
mand. Once, when, in scraping
the mud from my- shoes, my
dress was raised to what Mickey
considered an unladylike heiaht.
she again gave that shocked
whistle, her little red eyes snao-
ping.
A couple of young roosters
chased the bantam rooster from
the chicken yard. He was pretty
lonely. Then he adopted the
pigeon. He roosts in a filbert
tree but early in the momma
will fly from his perch and go
to can Mickey from her roost
in the woodshed.
"The older cats hate the pig
eon, considering her continued
existence a sheer waste of good
icoa. But the kitten and the
pigeon often sit cozlly side by
side."
Foolish? Inconsequential?
Well, maybe. That is, if to know
simple living still exists and
that there is yet a place where
life moves gently, be foolish and
inconsequential.
