Harvey's arrival, while he and
Susan are having luneh In her
borne, she receives a phone call
from another suitor, Pierre Du
pre, a Fighting Frenchman. Ha
asks to see her but, when she
ays she can't spare the time, ha
aeems strangely relieved. She
doesn't know that he phoned her
under coercion that a group of
Nasi agents have threatened
harm to his relatives in Franco
cnless he gets Susan to show
him through her father's war
plant en Long Island.
CHAPTER XXm
AS SUSAN returned to the
" kitchen after her phone
conversation with Pierre, she
was frowning.
"I do hope Pierre's feelings
won't be hurt," she told Har
vey. "Funny thing, though, he
honestly sounded a little re
lieved." "Relieved about what?" Harvey
asked.
"About not seeing mo."
"Then stop worrying about him,"
Harvey advised. "Let's think about
os. What's the program?"
"I thought we'd give this after
noon to Louise and Pete," Bun an
replied, "then keep the evening and
tomorrow for ourselves."
"Okay I" said Harvey.
"I'll call Louise right away, and
ask her and Pete to meet us at the
American Canteen. We can start
out from there.
"And L" said Harvey, "will take
tny little satchel and h e ma to a
hotel."
"Youll do nothing of he sort."
aid Susan. "You are to ;ue that

Harvey said. "Not having maids. I

AN HOUR later, they met Louise
and Pete at the Canteen. After
the Introductions had been made,
they stayed long enough for two
dances, Harvey and Pete swapping
girls, to have a dance with each of
them.
"Lucky guy. that Rogers chap,"
aid Pete, when he was dancing
with Susan. He was tall, broad, and
had a slow, fascinating smile. "And
so am I."
"You bet you are," said Susan.
"And don't forget me. I'm lucky,
too."
Louise, smiling up at Harvey, was
saying. "Susan Esterbraok ts a girl
' to a million. And I'm so happy that
Iron'rs the man ui her life."
"Thanks," Harvey replied. "Pete
is getting a grand break in having

"So am I getting a grand break."
Louise told him.'
When the music ended, Susan
said. "Now for the fleas I"

"We do" Harvey assured him.

The quartet hurried over to
where the Sea circus was enclosed
in a boxlike structure. A man
banded them magnifying glasses.
"Take a good look at Betsy, the
Ballet Cllrl," he said.
"Well, for goodness sake," said
Louise. "A flea In a ballet skirt."
"Look at those two," said Susan,
"drawing a carriage I"
"Imagine I" said Fete. "Darned 11
I ever thought a flea could do such
things. I thought they spent ail
their time leaping about and bit-
spent nearly an hour there
In the basement museum, and
then went out into the air.
"What now?" said Harvey.
"Any place we can go for s
swim?" said Pete.
"Most of the pools are terribly
crowded. I imagine," said Susan
"But we might try a hotel where
I've some friends. They can talu
guests for a swim in the hotel pool."
. Fortunately the friends were at
home when she phoned.
"Come right down I" the girl said.
"Jim and I can't spare the time to
swim with you, but we'll take you
down and"
"dump you in," Jim said, over
his wife's shoulder.
. "It's all fixed." Susan said when
she came out of the phone booth.
"We swim."
A little later, they were merrily
splashing about in the pool.
Harvey swam over to Susan.
"Hello, loveliness!"
"Hello, handsome," said Susan.
"Did anyone ever tell you that you
make Welsmuller look like a phys
ical weakling by comparison?"
"No," said Harvey. "But I'll bet
lots of people have told you you
could double for Venus."
"Come on." said Susan. Til race
you the length of the pool."
LOUISE and Pete, comfortably
relaxed on the steam-warmed
tiling, watched and applauded.
"I wouldn't have believed It,"
said Louise.
"What?" asked Pete.
"That I'd ever be swimming with
the glamorous Miss Esterbrook."
"You're just as glamorous as she
Is." said Pete.
"But don't forget I was once a
maid in her home."
"So what? It was only a means
toward an end."
"I know that, but now we are
close friends, Just as though we'd
been kids together."
"You might have been." said
Pete. "Only the Esterbrooks struck
It rich, and the Larsena didn't
Don't make such a to-do about It.
my precious. After all, it's time
folks talked less about democracy,
and started practicing it."
"Susan's doing that an right,"
said Louise.
"Swell girl." agreed Pete.
' "Harvey's a swell young man,
too." Louise said. "I hope they'll
keep on loving each other after this
mess Is all over."
"Why shouldn't they?"
"No reason, except that back to
their respective ruts they might
trow apart."
-nonsense!- Fete icoicea at Lou
ise. "Don't tell me you're thinking
of ditching me after the war?"
"Of course not" Louise laughed.
"And if you think you can ditch me
well, wake upl"
Pete gave her a quick kiss, then
dived into the pool. Louise dived
in right behind him.

tives here Sunday. Dunagan's
second son, Wayne, also is a
member of the U. S. Navy. They
are former residents of Prospect
and well known here.
Mrs. Wlllard Horn motored to
Keno last week and together
with Mr. Horn, who has been
employed on a large ranch there,
returned to their home here
Oct. 19.
Miss Donna Jean Adamson, a
student at Rogue River academy
at Jacksonville, is spending this
week with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. W. H. Adamson, near Wild
wood camp.
Pfc. Jean Fraedrlck of the
WACs returned Oct. 21 to Spo
kane after a 19-day furlough
sDent with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. E. E. Fraedrlck, Jr.
Pfc. Weldon Zundel, son of
Mr. and Mrs. W. Zundel, was
graduated from the aeronautics
dispatch school at Denver re
cently and was transferred to
Tinker Field at Oklahoma City.
Since being stationed at the lat
ter place, Pfc. Zundel has won
two medals for excellent shoot
ing. Miss Ethel Jacobs of Medford
was a guest last week of Mrs.
Ben Haynes.
Mrs. Karl Petersen and baby
son, Dale Marvin, were dis
missed from a Klamath Falls
hospital and returned to their
home here Oct. 22.
Pvt. Ted G. Jantzer left Oct.
23 for Fort Knox, Ky., after
spending the past week with his
oarents. Mr. and Mrs. Georee
L. Jantzer. Pvt. Jantzer is in a
demonstration regiment with an
armored force.
Mrs. Claude Johnson and new
little daughter. Donna Jean, re
turned to their home here last
week from a Medford hospital.
Oct. 16 they attended the wed
ding tof Mrs. Johnson's sister-in-law,
Alma Johnson, and Sea
man Clifford Mann, at the home
of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Croucher.

Lloyd Roberts and little daugh

erts and daughter, of Ashland,
living at the Wildwood camp.
The men are all employes of
Johnston Logging Co., who re
cently moved his equipment
from Dead Indian, for winter op
