Palm Beach, Fla., Oct. 23
(U.R) Eighty-eight men were
killed off the Florida coast
Wednesday night when two
tankers collided and exploded,
burning to death scores of men
and hurtling bodies hundreds
of feet into the air.
Majority of victims were
trapped below deck and were
burned to death while flames
ate every square inch of paint
off . each vessel. Others died
on . deck, their bodies charred
and seared beyond recognition
Skeletons were found in bunks
of one tanker when it was taken
to port and it was estimated
that more than 30 men were
blown to bits.
Twenty-eight bodies were re
moved from the vessel after
flames had devoured most ev
erything in sight, leaving only
a helpless hulk. Tonight, manv
bodies remained aboard the
other ship, which had been
loaded with several thousand
gallons of high-octane gasoline.
The explosion set off by the
fuel resulted in one of the most
destructive holocausts off Unit
ed States shores in recent years.
The ship was still aflame and
unapproachable the following
day, but bodies could be seen
on deck, piled near the stern.
It had drifted 15 miles ana
lay settled for more than 21
hours atop another vessel which
had been sunk by submarine
early in the war. It then freed
itself and drifted to shore.
The navy in announcing the
disaster tonight, said it was not
due to enemy action.
Twenty-eight men survived.
Four were burned severely. All
were landed at Palm Beach.

STRIKE EFFECTS
New York, Oct; 23. (U.R)
The administration's anti-infla
tion program wavered this week
as pressure heightened for high
er wages and farm prices while I
congress displayed strong re
luctance to boost individual in
come tax rates,
Most serious pressure for
higher wages came from the
coal industry through strikes
and from the railroad operation
unions which threatened a strike
vote.
Further complications devel
oped in the over-all picture
when the so-called farm bloc
came out more strongly against
government subsidies and in
favor of higher prices to the
farmer. .
Industrial activity showed ef
fects of the coal strike.
