London, Oct, 20 (U.R) Five
hundred persons a day are dy
Ing of starvation In Greece but
the gallant little nation grimly
buries Its dead and fights on
against Adolf Hitler.
Out of population of 8.000,
000, an estimated 880,000 per
sons already are dead, either
from starvation or German guns
Reliable reports say 100,000 of
the 880,000 died before firing
squads. '
Two hundred Greek villages
are In ruins, Every hour more
men, women and children col
lapse and die In the streets.
Wheat er Coffins
"Send us wheat or send us
coffins," is thn cry that comes
out of the stricken land,
But In the hills and mountains
of Greece 80,000 guerrilla pa.
triots fight on, keeping 12 to 16
German divisions busy and pav
ing the way for an Allied In
vaslon.
This picture of Greece today
came from persons getting in
formation from Inside the pll
laged land as regularly as the
morning mall. It was supple
mented by witness accounts from
Greeks who have escaped an
reached London.
It is a picture of a land of
the dead and dying but a land
where Hitler cannot stamp out
the burning desire for freedom,
Food reserves long since have
been exhausted, plundered by
the Germans. Officials believe
this coming winter may be the
worst ever for Greece with food
supplies 150,000 tons short of
last winter.
A Greek friend of mine said
the tragedy of Greece Is not so
much the dead whose bodies are
picked up every morning, as the
death reflected In the faces of
those dragging . starved bodies
through the streets.

Greek people," he said, "will
serve for all time as the most re
alistic illustration oi hell on
earth. .
"Imagine seeing ragged col
umns of men, women and chil
dren, who no longer wash now
that there Is no soap, picking
over the garbage of the Germans,
It 1 not uncommon to see men,
women and children drop dead
in the streets. When people die.
relatives place the corpses In
the gutters so they won't have
to surrender the bread cards oi
the deceased."
Athens, he said, is gaunt and
starved. All horses, cats and
dogs have been eaten.
The Greek government In ex
ile has tried to allevipte the sit
uation, sending food for free
meals and soup kitchens for '
about 150,000 persons. The Brit
ish lifted a blockade to allow
shipment of 8000 tons of wheat.
Several shipments have gone
through since mid-1942, but not
enough to halt the starvation.
But two-thirds of the popula
tion has not tasted meat or fish
since the occupation. Now there
is no meat or fish for any Greek.
The Germans have prohibited
fishing except near the coast.
where the catch is small. What
fish are caught are confiscated.
The guerrilla fighters live on a
diet of goats' milk, cheese, dried
fruit and olives.
Food Prices Soar
Wages have increased 60 per
cent while prices have gone up
as much as 1000 per cent.
"No government has gone so
much out oi gear financially as
Greece, one government offi
cial explained, "No country after
the first World War reached
such a dire financial condition
as Greece is now experiencing.'
But Grecian patriots still fight
and besides taking a heavy toll
have won control of most dis
tricts except tor major cities and
the coastal areas. Resistance.
however, has probably reached
its peak. -
The Greeks look out across
the waters that . irlnge their
country, watching ior ships and
troops of the United Nations.
They might survive the mas
starvation another winter but
It's doubtful that their resistance
could be maintained at the cur
rent high point.
"But don't get the Idea m
lost hope," said a Greek guer
rilla fighter who reached En '
iana. "we know freedom and
peace will come again. We only
pray the Allies will come ta
Greece aoon."
