Waves, is being courted by Pierre
Dupre, a Fiibtlrx Frenchman.
Pierre baa been threatened by
Carl Cooper, a liniiter man
whom he suspects of being a Nasi.
Carl has told Pierre that. It he
doesn't get Susan to show him
through ber father's war plant,
harm may come to bis family in
France, Busan knows that Pierre
is being hounded by Carl, but she
doesn't know why. Another of
Susan's suitors is Dick Craig, a
young man who has a Washing
ton war job. However, she has
fallen In love with Harvey Rog- :
era, Army flyer, and has prom
ised to wait for him until after
the war. Dick comes to New York
one evening and takes Susan to
dinner in Greenwich Village, He
proposes to her, refusing to be
discouraged by ber former rejee- -'
lions. When she turns him down
again he bints that be may be
come Interested In a girl la
Washington, but he fails to
arouse ber jealousy.
CHAPTER XV

"No, It's not that." said Susan.
"It's Just that there seems no
longer to be any place In the world
for aimless talk and fun."
"If." said Dick, "you could call
this fun."
Later. Just before he said good
night to her. he took her hand and
looked into her eyes.
"So you won't promise to marry
me?"
"No, Dick," Susan said. "I'm
sorry, but I Just can't."
"You won't wait for me, either?"
"No."
"Okay, then well have It the
other way 'round. I'll wait for you."
Dick tried to smile. "With me un
able to march away as a soldier. I'll
stay behind and watch you march
away to war."
. "Dick, don't be fllpant."

savagely, and kissed her hard and

SUSAN spent Sunday at home
with the family. And then, on
Monday, certain matters had to be
attended to. A little Job here and
a little Job there. Changing one's
mode of living Involved a lot of
detail.
"How much money shall I send
you each week?" her father asked.
"None." she replied.
"But. Susan." .ier mother
broke In. "you've always had an al
lowance, and"
"I know," said Susan. "That day
Hover."
"You'll want to buy some little
something occasionally," said hei
father. "No need denying yourself a
bit of fun now and then." -
"I'll manage." said Susan. "I In
tend to live on what I'm paid, or
know the reason why."
"How much Is it?" Mr. Ester
brook Inquired. -
"Fifty a month."
"And you expect to get along on
that!" her mother exclaimed.
"I do," said Susan. "I've enough
saved up from my last few allow
ances to buy what I need in the way
of clothes."
"But I thought the government
supplied those." her father said. '
. "Unlfomns only, darling. I have
to supply my own shoes, under
things, bathrobe, and so on,"
"You have to pay for all thai
yourself ?" her father said.
- "Yes. Dad. and I'll do It. too. Now,
stop worrying, you darlings, I've
also found out that I may be able
to come home some Saturday and
stay until Sunday night,"
"We'll be counting the days,"
said Mr. Esterbrook. "I'll miss you
like nobody's business."
AND then It was Wednesday
the day of her departure.
Pierre had called up and Insisted
upon seeing her off. She would
much rather have gone to the sta
tion unescorted, even by hei
mother and father. But she could
hardly ask them to stay home.
"Mind you, no tears," she warned
her mother.
"I shall shed a tear if I want to,"
Mrs. Esterbrook said, "It's a moth,
er's privilege."
"All right, darling shed them
But not where I can see you doing
"Why not?"
"You may get ms in a weeping
mood."
"I think it's perfectly natural foi
a girl to weep when she's going
away."
"Maybe so, but not when she'i
going away to war."
At the station, Pierre managed
to get her off to one side. "Youll
write me, won't you, Susan?"
"I'll try," Susan said. "But I'm
going to be terribly busy during the
weeks of basic training. I'll expect
you to write to me, though, Pierre
How Is everything going?"
"About the same," he replied.
, "Do you still see Carl Cooper?"
Pierre nodded. "That Is. he sea
me. He seems to be forever turn,
tag up."
"Don't let him get you down,"
Susan, said. "Perhaps he's simply
lonely."
"Perhaps," said Pierre, without
conviction. .
Susan's train was called then,
and she hurried back to ber pa
rents. -

Although the Seabees are still
accepting voluntary enlistments,
the nation during the past few
months has contributed so many
recruits that the quotas are be
