' One of the chief values to the
Allies of Italy's declaration of
war against her former Axis
partner was seen today as the
immediate and full use of the
Italian fleet.
Thoush more than 100 Italian
warships, ranging from battle
ships to torpedo boats, had. sur
rendered to the Allies, they
could not be used until Allied
seamen had been trained to
fight them, a task that would
have taken months.
Potentially Strong
But with Italy re-entering the
war on the Allied side, the ships
can now be fought by their
Italian crews. Though the
Italian navy was of little use to
.the Germans when Italy was
.their ally, It is potentially a
powerful fighting force and with
units of the American and Brit
ish navy acting as a stiffening
influence, could be of, tremend
ous value in the conquest of the
eastern Mediterranean Islands
held by the Nazis and in any
invasion of Greece and the
Balkans.
What Italy could contribute
to the war against Germany In
the way of ground and air
forces was known only to the
Allied high command, but it was
believed that a large part of the
Italian army was in the part of
Italy occupied by Germany and
hence lost to the Allies. The
sir force was believed to have
been completely shattered be
fore Italy surrendered.
