overseas duty when called home
by Mrs. Wilson's illness.

ing. Mrs. Pugh was here to be
with her mother, Mrs. Frank

be doing well.

Cox Returnt Pvt. William J.
Cox, who,, finished his basic
training at the marine base in
San Diego, Calif., recently, has
returned to San Diego for duty
after spending a furlough in
Medford visiting his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. W. E. Cox of 336 May
street. Pvt. Cox has been in the
marine corps for two months.
Alexander Home Pvt. Allen
Alexander was in Medford last
week visiting his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. C. R. Alexander, 106
Almond street. Pvt. Alexander
had just completed his "boot
camp" training at the marine
base in San Diego, Calif. On
completion of the training, he
was transferred into the marine
air corps. Arriving here Wed
nesday of last week, he left Med
ford yesterday to return to San
Diego for assignment.

Sample, son of Mrs. Muriel C.
Sample, 306 North Peach St.,
Medford, received his wings
when he graduated as a second
lieutenant from the Marfa, Tex.,
AAF pilot school recently, ac
cording to an announcement by
Col. George F. Hartman, com
manding officer. Sample was
commissioned upon completion
of his course in training in twin
engine planes. He 'was assigned
here from Lemoors basic flying
school, Lemoore. Calif. Sample
is a graduate of Medford high
school. '
. Phelan Promoted Word has
been received that Owen K.
Phelan, local electrician now in
the Navy Seabees, has been pro
moted to the rating of Chief
Electflcian's Mate. Mr. Phelan,
whose home Is at 732 West Sec
ond street in this city, was em
ployed by the California Oregon
Power company as a merchan
dise serviceman prior to his en
listment in July, 1942. After re
ceiving his basic training at
Camp Bradford, Va., he was
transferred to Camp Peary, Va.,

cently as an Instructor in the
primary military training de
partment. For the past few
weeks he has attended a chief
petty officers' school, and upon

Loan association. Chief Phelan's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. K.
Phelan. reside at 604 North

Cadet Austin J. Murray, 19, has
just commenced the army's
primary flight training course
at Thunderbird Field, II, Para-
dlse Valley, Phoenix, Ariz., ac
cording to a news release from
the field. Murray Is the son of
Mrs. Ivan D. Murray, 1033 West
Eleventh St. He Is a graduate
of Medford high school and was
employed at one time by T. A
Culbertson at the Medford air
port. i Cadet Murray's previous
training has been at Jamestown
college, Jamestown, N. Dakota
and pre-flight at Santa Ana,
Calif. -

Honor Graduate Lt. Warren
Carlyle Bayllss of the U. S.
marine corps was one of the
honor graduates in the class
which recently completed pri
mary flight instructors' school
at the naval air station at New
Orleans, La., according to a dis
patch from the school. Lt. Bay-
liss has been assigned to a mar
ine base in California. He at
tended Medford high school and
the University of Washinnton
and for two years years before
enlisting in the marine corps
was associated with newspapers
and magazines as an advertising
man. He is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Fred Bayliss of Mountcrest
Ranch. Hilt. Calif. Lt. Bayllss'
older brother, James, is in the
navy and stationed in New Cale
donia and his younger brother.
Bill, is at the University of
Colorado, Boulder, for training
under the navy s V-12 program.

CALLED BY DEATH
Wright Hicks, a native of
Southern Oregon, having been
born in Ashland, April 27, 1896,
passed away- at a local hospital
October 7. The family home is
oi Oak Grove road, route No. 2
Medford.
He has been employed by the
California Oregon Power com
pany as lineman for the past 20
years, and before that was em
ployed by the City of Ashland.
Mr. Hicks was united in mar
riage to Miss Ruby Johnson at
Ashland in 1923. He is survived
by his wife, his mother, Mrs.
Eda Hicks, one sister, Miss Er
nestine Hicks and an aunt, Mrs.
A. H. Thompson, all of Ashland,
and one brother, Howard Hicks,
Yrexa, Calif.
Funeral services will be con.
ducted from Perl funeral home
Monday at 2 p. m. The Rev.
Ward Rice, pastor of the First
Christian Church officiating. In
terment will take place in the
Mountain, View Cemetery, Ash-
iana.

Miss Jeanne Lorraine Swayne,

enlisted In the WAVES, women's
service of the U. S. Navy, and is
awaiting assignment in the
WAVES training school at Hunt
er college of Columbia univer

nounced here yesterday by Re.
cruiting Specialist Herbert W.
Crain, in charge of the navy re
cruiting substation at Medford,
which handles applications for
WAVES in this area.
Miss Swayne was formally
sworn Into the WAVES at the
Portland branch, office of naval
officer procurement. She com.
pleted her final tests with an
outstanding record. .
Graduating from St Mary's
Academy in the class of '43, Miss
swayne was a member of the
Young Ladies Sodality while at
tending school. Since her gradu
ation, she has attended Medford
business college, and for the past
four months, has been employed
as a cashfer at the Roxy Ann
Confectionery in Medfbrd.
Miss Swayne is a member of
the Sacred Heart parish of the
Catholic church in Medford. She
is the daughter of Mrs. Barbara
Swayne of this city.
DIES OF BURNS
Ashland. Oct. 8. fScl.l Col.
Carl Elmer Winkelman of the
united states marine corps, well
Known Ashland man, died at
Army Dispensary Camp Lockett,
Cal., Oct. 3, as a result of burns
received while fighting a forest
tire at Pine Valley, Calif.
At the time of his death he
was serving as an instructor,
and only a few days previously
had received word of a pending
promotion to technical sergeant,
Remains are being forwarded
to Ashland for burial.
Cpl. Winkelman was an Ash
land high school graduate, and
spent much of his life here.

How Motion Picture Executive
Joseph Schenck, who later' had
Income tax troubles of his own,
helped a gangster fake his in
come was told today in the fed
eral court trial of eight Chicago
mobsters and a Newark labor
leader charged with extorting
$1,000,000 from the Hollywood
industry.
Willie Bioff, convicted extor
tionist and the government's star
witness In the trial, which in
volves the International Alliance
of Theatrical and Stage Em
ployes (AFL), testified that in
June, 1937 he swapped $100,000
cash for a check from Schenck.
'I want to get a good farm,"
he said he told Schenck, adding
that he was afraid to because
of "what my income might look
like."
Schenck then helped him fake
his income records by trading
him the $100,000 check which
he deposited in his bank so that
he could appear in need of
money. Because of later "pub
licity he said, he never did buy
the farm.
"Publicity," he said, also
caused his official resignation
as George E. Browne's aide after
the latter, also a convicted ex
tortionist, was re-elected presi
dent of the IATSE in 1938 at the
spring convention in Cleveland.

Clara Louise Hartley of Phoe
nix, who died October S, will be
held at the Ashland Presby
terian church Saturday, October
9, at 2 p. m. Mrs. Hartley was
the wife ofC. C. Hartley and
had made her home in Phoenix
for 35 years.
She is survived by her hus
band, a sister and a brother in
Ashland, Mrs. Eva Frost and
Wilmer Poley, and another
sister, Mrs. Minnie Campbell of
Redding, Calif. .
J. P. Dodge and Sons of Ash
land are . in charge of funeral
arrangements.

several years, the merger be
came effective last midnight,
