The men were lifted from the
Willamette river last night, raft
and all, for a triumphant tour
of war bond celebrations in
downtown Portland. When audi
tors at war bond headquarters
finished tabulating a flood of
bond purchases, the state had
passed its quota by several mil
lion dollars.
The voluntary mariners six
shipyard workers and a YMCA
swimming instructor vowed on
September 18 they would stay
on the raft until the quota was
met.

Jackson County 4-H club mem
bers closed the 22nd annual fair
and livestock show yesterday
afternoon with committee chair
men and club leaders pronounc
ing it one of the most successful
ever held. Judging was complet
ed in the morning and in the
afternoon the auction of fat
steers, sheep and hogs was held,
with the young club members
receiving the highest average
prices ever paid for their stock.
Thirty steers were sold at an
average price of 31.5 cents per
pound, seven sheep at an aver
age of 18 cents and 17 hogs at
an average of 29 cents per
pound. Buyers were Medford
business men, business houses,
lodges and corporations. A com
plete list of buyers is to be an
nounced later.
It was pointed out today that
a great share of the money re
ceived went into the immediate
purchase of war bonds. Sales
during the afternoon at the bond
booth at the fairgrounds totalled
$1475 maturity value and ad
ditional pledges made by the
boys and girls selling stock will
bring the total purchases to
about $4,000 in bonds, it is
thought. 1

morning resulted in William
Axel's purebred Jersey yearling
heifer being declared champion
and gTand champion In that
class. Young Axel is from the
Bellview district. Ted Birdseye
of . the Westside club had his
producing Jersey grade cow
named champion and grand
champion in that division and
Jan Freeman of Antelope was
given champion and grand
champion award for his purebred
Guernsey producing cow. Allene
Owens of Antelope was given a
junior champion rating for her
senior heifer purebred Guernsey
calf and Margaret Reed of Table
Rock won championship award
for her Junior, yearling grade

his family resided before com

A notice charging violation of
a city ordinance, filed by the
city superintendent's office, has
been served at 408 South Oak
dale avenue, residence of Mrs.
Lillian Ehrheart, who recently
purchased the house from the
Judge H. D. Norton estate.
The notice alleges, according
to City Superintendent Frank
Rogers, that a restaurant is be
ing conducted at the residence,
which is in a residential 1-A
zone, in violation of a city or
dinance. He explained a res
taurant could be operated only
in a business class 3 zone.

Joseph W. Livingston, a form
er resident of Gold Hill and
lately of Ashland, passed away
In a local hospital early Friday
morning at the age of 85.
He was born in the state of
Georgia on March 16, 1858.
