Dickinson Promoted Norbert
Dickinson, who is stationed in
Iceland, has written his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Dickinson
of 837 West Second street, that
he has been promoted to chief
aviation radio technician. The
young man also wrote that he
came across a stack of wire
bound boxes recently made by
the Timber Products company
of Medford. This was especially
interesting to Dickinson since,
before enlisting In the navy, he
was employed at Timber Moo-
ucts. Dickinson has been in the
navy since January of 1942.
Biologist Feted H. R. New
comb, resident biologist for the

headquarters in Grants Pass for

Stimson said today that recent
successes in all world battle
theaters point to "ultimate pene
tration of the enemy's defenses
on all fronts."
The secretary referred specifi
cally to progress in Italy and
the Mediterranean, in Russia
and the southwest Pacific.

son refused today to deny or
confirm reports that Gen. George
C Marshall may be made Anglo
American commander - in chief
but commented that generals are
placed where they will be "of
the greatest possible use.
Questioned at a press and ra
dio conference about published
assertions that the U. S. army
chief of staff will be made com
mander of all Anglo-American
forces throughout the world.
Stimson said:
"In, general, we don't put a
general where we think he is
not of the greatest possible use.

"I don't wish to comment on
any individual, but that is the
general principle." '
Stimson inferentially denied
suggestions that a change in as
signment for Marshall would
constitute a "kick upstairs." He
referred reporters to recently
published laudatory articles on
the chief of staff and added:
"I believe others have an
swered that fully and freely."
Reporters also sought to draw
Stimson out about the recent
statement by Gen. Douglas Mac-.
Arthur, Allied commander in the
southwest Pacific. MacArthur
indicated that he felt Allied
strategy planned at the recent
Quebec conference relegated his
theater to a secondary position.
Stimson in response to que
tions said he knew of no plans
to call MacArthur home.

secretary- said. "I doubt if he
would want to leave at this time.

catch some fish in the Willa
mette river to eke out their

The seven men pledged them
selves toTemaln on the raft
and subsist on raft rations un
til Oregon passes its $104,000,

the state barely to the half way
mark, the castaways (63 feet
from shore) went into their sixth
day afloat with misgivings.
They held themselves to one
biscuit apiece for last night's
supper. But the doggoned fish
don't go for their lures or else

The United Mine Workers and
the Illinois Coal Operators asso
ciation today signed a new wage
agreement designed to increase
earnings of the miners by about
$8.75 a week, on a jive-day
week basis.
The agreement was Immedl
ately sent to the Wsr Labor
board for approval. It would
become effective, officials said,
with approval by the board and
Office of Price Administration
action to raise coal prices by
about 20 to 23 cents a ton.

of the local ration board. Here

Riddlesbarger, field price su
pervisor in charge of the price
panel program for the Portland
OPA district; Cliff Jackson,
Klamath Falls, price specialist,
and Miss Mary Jean Nelson,
price agent of the Portland
office. The school opened yes
terday and will be concluded
tonight.
Commenting on the price
panel program, which he has
been setting up for the Portland
district, Mr. Riddlesbarger said
today that the function of the
price panel Is primarily to dis
seminate information. "We are
authorizing the price panels to
interpret about 29 retail regu
lations. Others will be inter
preted by specialists at the
main office.
"In the near future the price
clerks and panel members will
conduct a compliance check of
local stores In each district,"
Mr. Riddlesbarger said, "and it
will be up to the panel members
to handle violations. The only
cases the district office will
handle will be willful or repeat
ed violations."
The official said that most
price violations were due to the
fact that the merchants were
not sufficiently informed, and
therefore the main purpose of
the program was to properly
Inform retailers. He stressed
the fact that both phases of the
program are largely in the
hands of volunteers and are not
being carried out by paid in
vestigators. Members of the local price
panel are William Barber, chair
man, John Moffat, Otto Frohn
mayer and M. E. Carmlckle,
and the latter three met with
the price officials yesterday.
